Just got my first Land Rover! Its a 90td with a 200 tdi engine. My first job is to get the heater going as I have no fan or anything working.
Ive removed the fan (which was full of water), Ive tried a direct feed to the motor & nothing so I'm assuming the motor is shot? Next problem I dont appear to have any power going to the motor, or at the switch on the dash and I'm at a loss as to why and what to do next?

Any help would be gratefully received.

Rich

When you say you don't have any power do you mean you've tested it with a volt meter?

If so its a case of tracking everything back until you find some juice, if there is an obvious cause you can fix do so or rewire forward checking as you go. Check the fuses and check the earths.

Looks a tidy motor. More photos?

Yes I've checked it with a volt metre, assuming I am checking it right? ignition on and at the terminals on the switch? Are there any more fuses anywhere bar the ones in main board?

Engine is all good drives nice!

So does it go from the fuse board up to the switch, and I should have some voltage on both the wires at the switch yeah?

If I'm reading the circuit diagram right, you should have voltage on the purple and green wire at the motor. The switch puts an earth onto either the green yellow or green grey wires at the motor. It the motor has been full of water, you'll be lucky if it isnt buggered.

If you remove the motor and spin it does it feel tight?
Older similar Austin/rover bl motors used to be something you could dismantle
I once opened up a smiths round heater with a motor that barely turned and cleared it up and used motor grease
Reassembled and it was spinning like a new one
Can't remember with not seeing a defender motor for a while but wondered if you could open it and then rebuild it with some fixings to secure it?
After all if it's knackered it's not the end of the world if you fail

The fan is stiff to turn so would say its shot! But like you say nothing lost if I can sort it so taking it apart tomorrow to see whats happening inside!

From what I remember the later motors are build up as a non serviceable part with no fixings that come apart think they used rivets or similar? Break these off and take a look inside
If the spindle is rusted clean it back with emery paper or a fine file
Tad of grease and reassemble with whatever is best
You can test it before refitting with some wires and a battery

Enjoy

Ok so my cousin took the motor into work (westland helicopters) and they stripped the motor cleaned it all up and testet it, it will run but only with assistance starting it so its shot.

So now trying to source a motor or complete unit, but having trouble finding one that age, it needs to be from a 200tdi or just a 90td to have the same connections, from a 300tdi onwards they have a different plug on. Anyone know of one? If not do you know if the later ones have the same mountings so will fit, and then I can just change the plugs over?

just looking at this post, I cleaned my old 110's heater up a couple year ago, using wd40 soaking in then after a week I used engine degrease then brake cleaner, I didn't dismantle I just took off of 110, I am very good friends with the buyer have been for 6 years and he said still working and is brill, however I would say do this at your own risk !!!!

but I found it worked even now 6 years on!!!!

p's obviously before fitment I would advise leaving it out of land rover for another couple of days to get rid of vapours from substances.

Without the cowling the fan's not actually pulling air through the radiator, just makes things a little awkward when tinkering with the engine running (having fan unguarded) and in theory it'll be sapping a small amount of power for no return (no cooling effect). You'd do well do overheat the 200 through normal use, but an electric fan is a decent 'upgrade', although some would disagree!

Finally got to the route of my problem the motor is definately shot so need to get hold of one if anyone has one? but also the purple wire that goes to the motor has a brake in it we found it byt chance, as we had power there one minute & not the next so an easy fix now just need a motor!
