IMO so much of the MOT is down to opinion, I think the once over for anything obvious and take it for the test is the best way.
Ive been to a few with other motors, some I was convinced would pass, only to find something needed doing, others that I thought would fail have passed without so much as an advisory (last example, that has passed 3 times at 2 different stations was an exhaust held on with a wire tie, this classes as secure, so is a pass, not even an advisory).

It's useful to know your stuff with old vehicles. Often they'll fail you on things you don't need.

My friends 2cv failed on 1% hand brake efficiency... they were testing the wrong wheels 2cv hand brakes work on the front wheels... amazing they got 1% on a free running axle. Took a bit of convincing for them to retest there and then though.

Couldn't agree more, the MOT is down to what happens on the day and the testers personal opinion based on the facts. I always get asked to do a pre-MOT check for people, well that is basically an MOT so just get it done, you get a free retest anyway (if your using a decent place that is). If you go to a 'MOT test £10' place then expect a failure, likewise if you go to a main dealer expecty a failure as they are use to new stuff, a good, trusted independent is your best bet.

The presenter should make the MOT tester aware of stuff like that, mechanics don't have an encyclopedic knowledge of all cars, I haven't seen a 2CV for years and I suspect most mechanics/testers now days wouldn't have a clue about the mechanics of them...

The 1% would be the resistance through the bearings and friction ;)

Best car we've tested is a GT40 whenever we revved it for the emmisions test all the lights went off in the workshop :D haha

Even if the tester hasn't seen a 2cv before he has just carried out a test on it so should realise that no brake cables go to the rear

Yeah he should, I would be annoyed if my testers didn't notice it but as I said testers dont know every car inside and out, there is a routine to testing and to do the handbrake on the rear is the normal thing done with all vehicles pretty much (before anyone shouts it out yes we all know landrovers have a prop brake) so its an easy and genuine mistake to make.

He told them when he brought it in...
