i have had coolent leak and have re topped up with water but till get check coolent level flash up when switch ignition on even when / have seen need to have right mixture of anti freeze as well to stop warningcheck coolent level got green in ant freeze in / but heve 4 lt of blue should it be ok to mix ? or not or drain and start again / with blue anti freeze to aliminate the warning check coolent level if so mix needed in uk vehicle.

thanks for any help

do not mix coolant !!!

and yes it should have the correct mixture for the light to go out !

you should have the RED / OAT coolant in there i think.

best to flush it out and refill. and fix the leak first

All true...but mine is filled with blue....there is discussion on if the OEM is pink or blue - I believe it was originally Pink....

Never mix pink and blue coolant...

One has additives that kill the organic additives of the other and vice versa....

EDIT: I notice you also post on rangerovers.net too...:D:D:D:D:D

You can use either

But in my handbook it states to use red / oat coolant

IMO why not use red ? It lasts a lot longer than the others

This is total crap, I have been running a 04 RR V8 HSE on pure mineral water for over a year now and and have no coolant warning coming up! I do concede the ambient temperature don't drop below 10dgs so I haven't any issue with freezing so why should this make a difference?

Yes bottled mineral water! When you cannot get proper water what else are you supposed to use?

1) Mineral water aint pure......it contains minerals (remember stalagtites and stalagmites, these are made by mineral water) are you with me?

2) Just water in the system will make it rust from the inside out and damage it (coolant has rust inhibiters and all manner of other things in it to maintain a healthy cooling system)

Coolant has anti-corrosion additives in it not just Glycol for anti-freezing properties....

Using just water (tap/mineral/RO/De-ionised etc) will rot the water ways.....especially were it passes through components of different metals - the water will act like an electrolyte and cause dissimilar metal corrosion through electrolytic Corrosion....

Pure Mineral water :scratching_chin:
Could be 'Peckham Spring Water' from Dellboy and Rodney :D.
But seriously i was under the impression that the coolant had to have the right mixture/viscosity for the coolant light to go out irrespective of what ever colour is in it.

My point was that that pure water will not make the low coolant warning signal warning come on the info centre, so where has all this ****e about needing the correct coolant mix come from, maybe as in your case in a lr2 this maybe the case bur in a a FF RR it does not I have three if you need proof!

in that case, it couldn't tell the difference between water, coolant or diet tango.

it's not that type of sensor afaik

Why would I care if if it was tizer diet tango or water in there so long as the temp was ok what is your point?

yes saint i post on both you guys are great and good imfo
thanks to all

when i drained my coolant to change gearbox oil cooler i filled with water, as i didnt have any coolant at the time and it was summer, i didnt get a check coolant level message. how could it know? i suspect sensor fault. i eventually filled with 50/50 g48 coolant

So we have established it don't need to need know what is in there except to say it is up to the correct level and temperature has nothing to do with messages as it would show this from cold? Exactly what I said previously!

The BMW system is cleverer than you think

Im pretty certain that sensor can sense the coolant mixture !!! From what Iv heard there's a smaller float switch in there which is dependant on the viscosity and gravity of the mixture !

When I lost some coolant I topped up with water... But coolant light stayed on... Mixture was weak, so added some antifreeze to balance out the mixture and the error cleared once it had mixed properly ?!

Need someone to confirm this feature

Landrover don't want you having a frozen coolant system now do they ? Lol

Bottled water is not good, the minerals in it will cause corrosion, if you can't get antifreeze the best thing is distilled water, easily obtained from the condensate of an airconditioner or dehumidifier.:)
