Hey guys. I've decided that since I've just got myself another landy, I should learn to weld. I can "bird sh*t" weld with an arc welder, but I'd like to learn how to do it properly. So far I've learned a couple of things, like cheap Migs sometimes have a permanent live torch which is bad? And you need a good amp range?

What amps would I need to weld a body panel (not a beginner job I know) and also a chassis?

I'd like to spend under £300, less if possible. What's about that's half decent?

i bought a cosmo 170 mig which everybody slags off, once i did a little mod to the wire feed which is where their bad reputation comes from it's been a blinding little welder.cost me £40 too which was a result seeing as it was brand new.

What's the max and min amperage on that Cosmo? I've been looking at a Clarke Mig160TM. Seems to have a good reputation and spares backing. Also has the ability to accept a refillable bottle easily.

I have a Clarke 155 Amp mig welder which was bought new in the early 90s. It's still going, but the casing was a nasty cheap thing. The gas valve in the torch playes up and the outer cable going into the torch broke after a year or so. It does get the job done and I would buy another if I could not afford something better, like the Murex 180 Mig welder I used to use in work - great quality but I think they cost about £700 new.
