megavibration

any ideas would be greatly appreciated, there was a gentle vibration this morning on the way to work, a journey of about 2 miles, tonight coming home the vibration was terrible, the whole car shook, oil is ok water is ok, wheel nuts are tight, theres no play in the uj's, quickly running out of ideas, does anyone have any ideas PLEASE !!!!! S0orry it's a 1996 300tdi with manual gearbox and it's the es model, don't know if this makes a difference.

Did you check the UJ's with it out of gear/handbrake off?

no handbrake was on, doh!!! i take it this makes a difference, was probably in gear too

yes it does.........chock wheels, handbrake off, out of gear and try again

tried it again with handbrake off' i can twist the rear one side to side but the big round thing in the middle of the car twists too, (where the rear prop comes from) sorry don't know what it is called, could this be it?

The big round thing in the middle of the car is the hand brake drum.
Can you feel i its comming from the front or rear?

Have a search, this is a common thing, but can have several causes, sometimes more than one.

Mine had a swivel shim problem.

Uj joint breaking down through the day. I had mine in gear couldn't find play in anything. Not untill my mate said. (as blue beasty) take the hand break off. whooooo The front uj in front of the transfer box was shattered. easy replaced fine now.
