So thanks to a split gearchange cover gaiter I have drained what looks like milkshake from my Discovery 2 gearbox, the vehicle is new to me so how long it has had oil contaminated with water in it I don't know, I suspect quite some time.
Thankfully one of our great contributors to this site pointed me in the direction of the gaiter otherwise I would have never guessed that was the culprit!
Other contributors have suggested flushing the gearbox with gear oil, i.e. refilling it running it for a few good few miles, draining and filling again, and possibly a further round of fill and drain. However, I'm not sure how much horrible sludge might be in there and I have been reading up about flushing manual go boxes with diesel (or kerosene), obviously not running the vehicle but simply filling the gearbox, letting it soak a while, and then draining.
There seems to be a lot of different opinions about this on the net, some saying it's a great option other saying don't do it. If anybody has experience of this it will be great to hear from them?

Thanks in advance

The r380s run well with automatic transmission fluid in them. Like a dexron 2. These oils have a lot of cleaning additives and are cheap so make good flushing oils, you could drive the car a few days to make sure everything is washed out.

Thanks for the comments and suggestions, sorting through my garage I find I have some Dexron which I had for a previous vehicle and had forgotten about. Given that I have it a sensible choice seems to run it with that for a while on Dexron, drain and then refill with MTF.

The opinions on using diesel/kerosene to flush seem too divided to take a risk on it!
