hi folks

just wanna pick your brains

i have seen a range rover p38 diesel it a manual:eek:
is it a good idea to get a manual are there hidden faults in the manual gearbox or summit as you dont see many of them
also will it do more mpg being as its manual

thanks in advance
rob

You might get a bit more mpg,but they are horrible - they are so easy to stall and need frequent gearchanges to get the best out of them.Like most modern ( ? ) turbo diesel engines they are much better against an autobox,TD5 being the best example.

Having driven both, back to back, I'd argue the case.
A friend has a newer diesel auto and its not a patch on the manual.

Not by a long shot!

But then, venture into town. . .
Well, you deserve what you get ;-)

Also manage to get 4 ~ 6 mpg more than the auto.
I am sure better could be attainable – with a lighter right foot.

Hi,

I have a manual diesel and best I can get out of it is 30-31mpg. Haven't yet stalled it though. No problems with gearbox so far but it has only done 33K. I tried a manual with 110K on the clock and it had weak synchro on 2nd gear and gearstick resonated at certain rpms. Never driven an auto so can't comment. A lot depends what your expectations are. They ain't quick thats for sure. Mine'll pull on the flat in 1st or 2nd with foot off the gas but it won't pull from standing in 2nd like my 3.5L classic could.

aye it really is horses for courses. a v8 auto is nice in the city and if you afford the gogo juice. and fab for posing.
i used to have one! but the fuel bill was killing me.

but for us poor rustic folk who need a working/playing tool (at low cost) then the diesel manual is the right truck.

and yes you have to use first gear!

I have to agree, i've had the V8 petrol models, the one I have now is the 2,5 BMW unit, it goes faster then the legal speed limit, tows my huge 4 wheel trailer, quiet, comfy, sure its a bit sluggish, but she 'lifts her skirts' if you keep the revs up, the norm for a turbo-diesel, the best bit is the 30-35 average mpg.
If I want to tear-arse about, I get the Jag out, or the big bike, I don't expect high performance from what is basicly a truck with the aerodynamics of a housebrick:)
Love it to bits by the way.

Well I loved my manual DSE. In fact I deliberately bought a manual because the auto box with the BMW diesel engine is supposed to be crap in the RR! I know someone who bought a diesel auto new (many years ago) - he traded it back into the dealer after a few months and bought a new manual version because he thought the auto was that bad!

Matt.

Hi,
Im looking into buying a P38 and am fancying the manual diesel!!

I dont know if im being dump but how do you change into low ratio on the manuals as from the pics ive seen there seems to be no transfer position like on the auto H shape layout????

Ive not found one to go look at yet so not been able to look myself and its really bugging me!!!

Thanks

According to the manual booklet in my P38 (which is auto, lol) you hold down the clutch and press a button on the facia switch pack (on the left of the cruise control button - on mine its just a blanked hole) that looks like two cogs. This engages Lo range.

Along the top centre dash panel is a row of switches, one of which has gears printed on it,this the transfer box ratio switch, the vehicle must be stationary & in neutral, push this switch & it will power from hi to lo, or vice-versa, also, a red indicator will light in the switch button & there will be a message on the dash, 'high' or 'low'.

If you are in the market you will not find one nicer than this.

Check out my sign off, I will be selling mine shortly for c.£8.5k. Its a 98 S DHSE which for that year was a limited edition to 600 examples - http://www.rrr.co.uk/P38/Models.htm (for spec) - It has all the below on it, the only things that need to be looked at are a re-gas on the air con ready for the summer (blows cold now but needs doing) and at some point over the next 10k or so it will need a nearside front wheel bearing. Other than that it has had £1500 spent on the air susp including compressor and bags, recent Pirelli Scorion Zeros, retrimmed pillars etc, new discs and pads, PSI performance tuning box (can be removed if necessary), has had new exhaust etc. Full colour coding from factory, sidesteps, electric seats (in good condition), 2 prev owners, T & T, FSH, full RR rubber and carpet mats etc. Will take more pics when able. This is gorgeous and even the dealers say how well kept it is etc. 2 small dents, 1 parking, 1 in rear nearside wing (like 50p sizes), no real stone chips, basically it is my baby. Forgot to say, does c.33mpg on the motorway and pulls really well with the PSI box, uses hardly any oil.

Check my posts, you can see what I have reported wrong and what I have done about it. Better to buy from someone who loves his car enough to go onto forums etc. Better the devil you know.........

Looks like I may be able to get a new shape or RR Sport with my new job (I am a lucky man!!)
