So I am nearing the end of my rebuild and will hopefully be having the mot done soon. I am confident she will pass on everything except for the emissions which i am a little apprehensive about. Reason being, I was foolish enough to keep the old 19j engine and it hasn't been run properly for a good few years and she's rather smokey.
My plan is to give it a good run before the mot, put something like Forte cleaner in.
Is there anything else that i can do that'll help improve the emissions?

Thanks

Jasper

fill the filter with forte you can also use veg oil in your tank

as in fill the filter right up with forte or just a little? as is that right before the test?
With veg oil, do I have to use completely veg oil or do i have to mix it and treat it?
thank you

Certainly a good long run, get it well heated up and clear any lurking gases and deposits in the exhaust. New air filter, oil and filter change, set tappets. Some say additives help, I haven't tried them, so I don't know.

Try and turn up for the test with the engine at full temperature, they will test the oil temperature before testing, and you don't want it sat idling for ages to come back up to temperature.

There is no reason a well set up 19j will not sail through emissions testing, mine does every year, the tester usually comments that it is lowest readout they have ever seen for an old diesel.:)

Yes the worst thing you could do is let it idle to get some warmth into the engine. Better to take it for a good run and get it proper hot. Diesels dont really get that hot idling but put them under load and they warm up quickly.

Pulling the air filter makes sure there is no restriction to cause over fuelling and emission problems. Put it back once the MOT is done.

I was taken by surprise when the requirement to have the oil temperature over 80c came in, so I had to take it out for a quick spin round the block. as you say, it doesn't heat up at idle.
Now I blast down the bypass and time it to arrive at the exact time the test is booked to start.

I have heard of removing the air filter, never had to resort to it myself, but always fit a new filter before the test.

Cheers guys, I'll chuck a new filter on the order list then!
Scared to go for a good run, knowing my luck, it'll start to fall to pieces!

My 19j has just sailed through the MOT, as has been said get it nice and hot with a high speed run to clear all the soot out of the exhaust ( high speed being a relative term lol)

Aha loads! I've probably forgotten to tighten countless nuts so genuinely will not be surprised if I arrive at the garage tub-less, roof-less or wheel-less :D

 Work front to back checking every nut, bolt and screw possible, even if you know it's tight.
Then go over it again to check the ones you missed :p

To be honest when I used to work in a garage we used to use the forte stuff and it did seem to work. Or at least get it through a test.
