Hi folks

Here I am with my problem of the week again... Oh the joys of owning a range rover!!

So, following on from my recent problems (cam sensor fault & thermostat fault) I ordered the parts yesterday with a view to replacing them on Friday along with the spark plugs....

In the meantime, I experienced a bit of misfire on the way home Tuesday; car had a bit of a grumble then eml came on. Reset it when I got home and ran on petrol instead of lpg today thinkin my lpg system needs a service.

Got into work this morning and all of a sudden my engine started to sound like a lawnmower; limped into the car park, popped the bonnet and was shocked by the noise... A sort of loud chugging! Noise seems to come from the passenger side bank, at the back of the engine... Put my hand there and lo and behold I felt air blowing in rythm to the noise.

I'm guessing it's something to do with the intake manifold?? Perhaps the gaskets blown?

No other symptoms although the thing is shuddering especially when I start to turn the wheels.

Eml light is on and the code thrown up is p1301 multiple misfire. Idle speed is slightly higher than it should be and cylinder 8 is showing increased roughness on the diagnostic.

Any suggestions or ideas? It's still in work... Need to get it to a garage but don't know if I should drive it!!

I've posted a video of the noise below for info... I know it sounds awful!!

I would check over the whole crank vent system. These are known for failing leading to poor running. There are two pipes under the acoustic cover that dive down the. A I of the engine, if these feel spongy or soft replace the whole lot. It's a good idea to do the PCV valve at the same time and the oil separator. Look out for Saints how to.

Thanks for all the replies.

I'm going to get the sparks out tomorrow so should have an idea if there's an issue there.

One thing I have noticed today is some fresh oil seepage on the underside if the engine... Can't make out where it's coming from at the moment the top certainly seems dry.

Don't want to jump to a conclusion that it's linked but I've not been aware of a leak before now!

Any more ideas, would that be common if the intake manifold had blown?

Cheers

Update-

Ady you were spot on, it has blown a spark plug on cylinder 3!!

I'm guessing that will mean a new cylinder head!!? Or can these be heli coiled?

Cheers
Has it actually destroyed the thread? Pretty unusual if it has.
I don't know about helicoiling it, but I have machined out the plug hole re-threaded and fitted an alloy bush internally threaded for the plug on a motorcycle engine. The bush was pinned in place.

ive helicoiled heads before with no issues. Unless its really buggered should be an easy job with the head off.

Hell I have done one with the head on! but i wouldnt recommend it (customer insisted)

Tis possible with the tap heavily coated with grease to catch the swarf. Turn the engine over without the plug in after tapping to blow any that the grease didn't catch. Done it many times in the past without problems.:)

does sort of work, but i still dont like doing it.

Tis'nt the right way

Cheers guys....

According to the garage who diagnosed it the thread has gone in the head!

Trying to find someone now who will do the work...

Out of interest what sort of price should I be looking at to have the head off and done?

if the head was off an engineering shop shouldnt charge you more than 20 notes! its literally a 5 minute job.

cant the garage whip the head off and do it for you? I would imagine around 100 notes should suffice
