Hiya lads, HELP.... me discos lost main beam again !!!!!! i'm on my third set of stalks in 14 months and the last 2 were from landrover themselves and at £62 quid a throw it's getting daft now, i have spots added that work on main beam but there wired through a relay and overide switch as i have done for years on rally cars never had probs then unless i had big wattage bulbs in and they would then burnout the switch, cannot work out what the cause is for this re-ocurring prob....

the main beam is as was on a 300 disco only the spots are relayed via a seperate switch, but the minute i hit main beam the lights go to side light's but the flash still works so if the head light's were on the relay what would be the benifit but more wiring, the stalk's still buggered i think,,,,

seam fine i had new plugs fitted to the back of the head lights to rid any earth probs and the rest seams fine, it just seams to burnout the stalk contacts.... why???

Just wondered. Dunno if it's the same as the Defender or not, but does yer plugs that fit into the back of lights, join into more connectors further back a bit? If so, there might be a problem there. Mines were a bit iffy for a while, gave them a clean and a wee bit crimp to tighten them and no more worries since. That's just my thoughts, and ah'm no expert, but sumtimes it might just be sumthing silly like that. Or a short across sumwheres;) :D

Thanks for that mate but we are sure it's the bloody stalk AGAIN as tryed one from a mates, HEY PRESTO lights work, just cannot understand why they keep going, and god forbid i go to another garage and watch them just scratch there heads whilst saying 'i dunno why' and try and charge me for that joy..

on the discos are the headlights relayed? or does the full current get switched via the stalk? its only 5.5amps per channel.

if their not relayed, i'd just wack a couple in there, that way your seriously reducing the total load on the stalk.

Wot I meant was that if you think the stalks are buggering up cos of the amounts of electrickery they are having to handle then why not have the switch operating a relay which would handle the aforesaid electrickery to save you knackering the next one. Have you taken the switch apart to see if the contacts are mendable?

it would be interesting if you posted some pictures on the guts of the thing. have they burnt out inside? maybe you could wack a multimeter inline to see what the current draw is on main beam.

Right.... After further inspection of the stalks, what did i find, a tiny bit of plastic had melted and was stoping the rocker conntact for main beam connecting, the inside of the switch is simple contacts no circuitry or likewise.. trimed it of with fine snips, managed to get the switch to go back together and ...... IT WORKS..... all the bloody money i've spent on switches.... DOOOOHH

that bit of plastic was obviouslt melted from heat on one of the connections/components rite? was it casused from the rear of the connection socket? if not u must be pulling some serious juice through there.

Daft thing is that the bit of plastic was shaped like it was meant to be there, but was just fouling the contact by a cats whisker, the spots only run 55watts and standard headlight bulbs **** iv'e run uprated headlight bulbs and 100watt spots through bloody ford switches and there ****, never any probs

WAIT !!!!

Are there not TWO TYPES of switch involved, and the ONLY difference to be seen is the wiring on the connector pluggy?

I think I had all this grief with the Def90 1992 year ... all because the first replacement stalk was the other version.

Who knows about this problem?
