I think my alternator has failed. While driving the battery warning light came on then started flickering, also the rev counter stopped working. I have checked the connections and all looks well. I have also checked the 100A fuse.

I have now removed the unit from the vehicle, any ideas on how to fault find. I have checked the brushes and they look fine, I suspect the diode or voltage regulator.

Any ideas more than welcome, or it is 170 for a new one

Ta!

you need specialised test equipment if you want to test each part! its probably the regulator that has failed. you can have your alt reconditioned for less than a new one but you would get one even cheaper from a breakers or fleabay.the bosch ones are a better alt and easier to fix if they go wrong.

Take it to an auto spark - £40 to rebuild it.

Or order up a reg pack for a £5 and try that - would be worth doing the brushes while you're in there - well would be worth doing it all really - kit's from auto electric shops online - there are also guides out there if you google them, inc. how to change the bearings and all.

Most expensive Magneti here is 139 plus VAT - and it is Magneti alt's they are selling.

Got it tested, it was the rectifier/regulator. A new one was only £30 more than getting if fixed, so I have a nice shiny alternator bolted in and working!
