I am having problems when trying to pull away, its very easy to stall and bad acceleration until around 3000 rpm reading on hear i am thinking maf maybe?
gave it a full service yesterday including fuel filter, car has done 47000 miles.
How do i get at the maf sensor do i need to take the air cleaner housing off? and is it just a pull off plug, if i then take for a spin what should i expect with it unplugged?

If i decide to go for a synergy 2 could anyone explain how these work? Do they just inject more fuel, as i have read that in some cases they can improve fuel consumption.
And how does the synergy differ from the boxes that plug into the ecu?

Right i have unplugged the maf sensor and it doesnt make any difference if it is plugged or unplugged?
Should i have noticed a difference?
 
yes you should have seen a change. As the MAF provides the ECU with airflow and air temps. By removing it the ECU should default back to a standard temp. (which i think is -5 Celsius)

So by removing the MAF cable the engine should get more fuel = more smoke. By disconnecting it and no change it shows you that the problem still exists somewhere else in the system. Hopefully another landyzone member will help with fault finder.

oh and just and overview the synergy module is a tuning box that will alter the signals from the engine sensors which are delivered to the ECU. The basic way it works is by changing the way the ECU works by giving it local area settings for the UK. This improves the torque, efficiency and power from the engine. As when the car is standard its designed to work in all conditions. From the frozen arctics at -30 Celsius to the saudi desert at +50 Celsius

thanks for your reply and explanation of the synergy box, i am thinking of getting one of these and also changing the maf for the pierburg one, is it a good chance that beings that unplugging the sensor and nothing seems different that it is just the sensor that is the problem?

Any users comments of the synergy box would be great, and also how easy it is to fit and connect up.

the synergy is well worth a buy, just talk to the insurance company first. As they will want to know whats going on. its a very easy fit it just plugs into the standard freelander wiring and sits between sensors and the engine ECU. basically unplug the old cable and plug the synergy im-between.

You should have noticed a difference by unplugging it. If its still the same whether it was plugged in or not shows the problem still exists and is something else. What you should notice is a slight improvement in performance due to more fuel being sent to the engine at the expense of a reduced MPG and more smoke.

From your description you should look at all the turbo hoses and maybe the turbo itself. As its supposed to kick in at about 1500 rpm. and it sounds like on your car its not cutting in until 3000rpm I think the turbo is a variable geometry one, so the internal vanes change so they can work across a wide rev range. It might me that this system may have failed.

Could i just ask what engine you have in your freelander? as i've been talking about a diesel TD4.

yes its the td4 engine.
i have noticed that at the very front of the engine, i think its the intercooler hose there is a sensor inline about level with the oil filler if you stand in front and it is very oiley around the sensor and the hose, what is the sensor for and why would it be all oiley around it?

It's a thermistor - air temperature sensor.
We got one our '06 TD4, not found it in the Rave or Haynes book but it must send info back to the ECU about the inlet air temperature.
It is in the air intake to the engine between the intercooler and the inlet manifold.
The air going past it has been through the turbo and has the breather air from the engine mixed in so it will be oily as will the insides of the large pipes (turbo hoses) - quite normal. :)
Don't try to fix it if it ain't broke! ;)
It's the oil that makes the turbo hoses degrade and eventually split - that's normal too :)
If the oil is getting onto the outside - either something is loose (jubilee clips) or the hoses are getting porous and will need changing soon.

Many thanks for your info, mine is a 06 td4 also.
I will have a look in the morning and make sure the pipe isnt split then, but its getting quite oily around where the sensor fits.

Ours were going a bit soft and didn't seal that well - @ less than 3 years old.
Changed ours for silicone ones from Fleabay. No more leaks :):)
Cost more but should keep it cleaner and last a lot longer.
They did on the disco - six years while we had it and no leaks. ;)
 
I too wondered what the sensor on the front was, I found it oily inside when I cleaned everything out as I detarred my EGR. (now running with EGR vac hose off and plugged, it's deffo better)
It's either for flow or temp but I've never seen it referred to before until reading your post.
Fingers crossed we will soon be wiser!
 
Worth checking out that your crankcase breather has been changed recently or better still upgraded, check/ replace air filter, fuel filter, clean or better bypass egr, & as another member says, check turbo vane operation & associated vacuum solenoid actuator etc. Run injector cleaner through as well to help eliminate dirty injectors though this is less likely. Fitting a synergy is a worthwhile mod but don't bother till you've fixed your fault first as you won't benefit just now.
