@Henry_b
Please explain VANOS to me (I could goggle but I think it would be beneficial to anyone reading this at a later date)
The Vanos on the M62 it varies the timing by moving the position of the camhafts in relation to the drive gear. The relative timing between inlet and exhaust valves are changed.
At lower engine RPM the position of the camshaft is moved so the valves are opened later this improves idling quality and you have a smoother power delivery. As the engine speed increases the valves are opened earlier this increases/enhances torque and powah! it also marginally reduces fuel consumption and lowers emissions a bit.. At high engine speeds the valves are opened later again, because this allows full power delivery so you get that M62 growl
Or rattle when it's broken
single infinitely variable VANOS is what is used on the M62!
Amd thats all i can remember off the top of me head..
Basically VANOS is variable valve timing
Were there earlier non VANOS M62 engines? Is the VANOS worth the hassle that it can become? Is there a way of stripping it out and getting shot of it if it becomes troublesome without altering engine characteristics too severely?
Slightly off topic..
I work and supervise over some apprentices when i'm mucking around with engines and fixing various cars, in a workshop in the middle of nowhere, fookin freezin!
I've been in the place from 7am to around 10pm, just got home..
The Apprentices are so ahh indescribably annoying and lazy, we have a customer that needs this astra fitted out with a rad and new Aux belt by tomorrow, i tasked one of the apprentices to do it..
A simple 30min job..
Of course the little asswipe has disappeared and upon investigation the little **** had left and gone home..
So this little package of parts needed to be fitted, great just when i thought about goin' home 'twas 9.30pm so not too late!..
New aux belt to boot.
And all fitted out within 25mins..
Straight forward and simple as shyte.
Pressure tested and bled too.
No leaks..
And finished by 10.15pm.
These Apprentices aren't gonna have a future if this is how they're going to screw around..
Such a shame how lazy this generation has become..
And now the piccies won't play ball!!!!
Why should they do what they are supposed to? There are no real consequences facing them if they don't, all that happens is mummy and (maybe?) daddy say "there, there didums, them nasty men were mean and nasty to you, we'll make a hate crime report to plod in the morning", when I was a kid it was do as you are supposed to or get the belt and if you phucked up again and made a show of mum or dad woe betide you for it!!! Getting the sack don't worry them, as there aren't enough bodies to fill their place should they get the boot and they know it, you can't bollok them properly or they run off crying and then make complaints.
I have no answers, well, none that people would appreciate
when did he leave after or before contracted hoursSlightly off topic..

are you 18 years old ?are you an apprentice too but with a work ethicI think the boss is willing to give him another chance, but i'm not holding my breath.
Not that i care too much you understand..
are you 18 years old ?are you an apprentice too but with a work ethic
what are you working towards at collegeBit hard to explain but i'll do me best..
I am at a college course from Monday-wednesday..
From wednesday to saturday i'm working at a small garage as part of the "work experience" thing that is recommended by the college apparently work experience looks good on my CV, a small garage had a placement for a capable person to do some jobs so i jumped at the opportunity.
Usually around my work hours there are a three Apprentices.
Unfortunately they don't take it seriously, don't think they realise they're mucking around with Peoples cars instead of the scrap we have at college.
I get on very well with the boss and i have a good work ethic plus experience so its a match made in heaven and i'm almost always work till the late hours finishing jobs...
It's not that the others are incapable they just don't take it seriously and/or think its too much like hard work..
Which is a shame..
That astra above was an easy job, he just couldn't be bothered..
I'm gonna be doing an apprenticeship at a franchise dealer next year, this is to just give me a stepping stone if you will..
what are you working towards at college
with the boss you are working with already?Engineering and Motor Vehicle..
Being LV1 its basically teaching you the basics, like tools and safety etc etc..
Not challenging enough for me personally but its interesting..
Apprenticeship next year. hopefully.
with the boss you are working with already?
you need a route to where ever your going and its great youve put effort in ,unfortunately its often been lacking previously, often the problem is showing or proving what an asset you are by interview but you can by work experience
you just need the papers ie qualification so apprenticeship is a valued paper, i trained or was an apprentice agricultural engineer often looked down on by car mechanics, but it gave me the skills to build on with rebuilding engines gear boxes and any other unit which the car mechanics at the time had stopped doing ,but maybe your current boss offers an opportunityAt college there are a few lecturers
and at this small rural garage there is the BOSS, 'tis what i call him..
He doesn't mind
College concentrates on the quizzing the students from books and the occasional practical day
Couldn't really hack only 1 day in the shop so i applied for work experience the rest of the week in a small garage..
I think an apprenticeship is the way to go, its just deciding what brand and area to specialise in..
Land Rover would be my dream but as they say, best laid plans
