I have a 30 year old MOD 90 2.5NA.
Have recently towed a caravan for 3 hours and is now noisy in 5th, sounds like bearings. Sound fine in 4th but also a bit noisy in second. Not too bad when not towing but does now sound different. I also did a bit of deep wading before so checked the oil which did not appear to have water in. Anyway my question is are all LT77 gearboxes exchangeable? I see on ebay etc they are fitted to a few ex Leyland / Rover vehicles will one from a Sherpa / Jag / Disco etc fit a defender?
I want to have a go and pull it apart and give it a recon but also get a replacement if I find one cheap enough in the mean time to keep on the road.
