low range selected and engine rumble and smoke

when I select low range gear I get a misfire/rumble feel to engine and lots of smoke, does any body have any ideas? is fine in high range. it is a 300tdi

Clutch could be dragging

Are you off road when this happens or on tarmac??

im on tarmac just to try it out in works car park only gone 20metres or so. and it was cold engine wise and weather. when car is hot the problems gone.

Did you just select low range, or did you select 'diff-lock' as well?

Low range is selected by moving the lever straight forward, Difflock is selected by moving the lever sideways and you should get a lamp that comes on, on the dashboard.

If it's in diff-lock and you are on tarmac, there is potential for damaging your transmission, as you should only ever select diff-lock on loose surfaces.

no difflock just low range.
