I have a 1999 TD5 Land Rover Discovery 2 that broke down on me on holiday and now refuses to start.
The fuel pump got quite noisy and the sediment warning light came on, lost all power soon after and the engine cut out.
I replaced the fuel filter and purged the fuel system a couple of times and started with no real issues apart from the fuel pump was still noisy.
Twenty or so miles later lost all power again and engine cut out and would not start, to cut a long story we got recovered home and on closer inspection the fuel pressure regulator was leaking fuel down the right hand side of the block and bell housing. It has just under half a tank of fuel in it.
I have taken out the fuel pump and gave both of the gauzes a clean as they were pretty dirty.
So I have replaced the gasket and cured the leak however it still refuses to start, the fuel pump is back to normal and I can assume is pumping as I can here it humming away during the purging process. I can hear a hissing of air from in or around the head when the fuel pump is running through the purging process, is this normal?
In the past year I have replaced the injector harness and there is no oil present in the red plug of the ECU. It has had a replacement fuel pump with the past eight months, so I am confident I can rule them out and It is regularly serviced.
My question is how do I diagnose what is wrong first, as I dont want to just start replacing perfectly good parts, which clearly is a waste time and money. I have read many of the threads regarding this issue and are not really sure what to tackle first.
I am in Blandford in Dorset and would appreciate any help and advice please.
