Evening folks this might sound like a stupid question, but what is exactly the point in light guards? I mean are they ment to stop The lenses getting cracked or somthing? I mean the gaps between the bars are far to wide to stop a stone of a rather large size from cracking them even if the object hitting the lights was wider than the gap between the bars it would still crack or break the lenses if enough force was applied. I like the look of lamp guards and was thinking of getting a set but I would like to know what the practical reason is for them??

Many thanks folks. Rifleman.

They look cool, what more do you need? :D Bit pricey though mind you...

I suppose theyre more designed for if you hit something gently the lenses wont crack? Or combined with bull bars to nudge stuff out of the way? Just a random guess... I dont have them, but would like a set!

maybe more to do with tree branches 'n suchlike ..
for the rear lights .. maybe car park bollards .. low brick/stone walls 'n tree branches :)

maybe it's just 'something' to sell to 4by4 owners
'cause some folks buy a 4by4 .. or similar .. for the added sense of security in todays
'the world might degenerate into anarchy .. and i need to survive' mindset ..
so .. someone makes 'n sells 4by4 lightguards to satisfy those needs as far as the car lights are concerned ..

then there's the 'image' 'n 'styling' for folks who like to show others that they are ready for 'anything' .. including rabid monkeys and nasty tree branches ..

then there will be some who need them for purely practical purposes ..
on the plains of south-africa .. or somewhere .. else ..

Ok cool so really no real reason for them then I guess? But they do look cool and when I see other freelanders with them I want a set

different type ..

probably more useful against small flying stones etc ..

Headlight Protectors, Headlamp Protectors & Guards

" Headlamp Protectors are the perfect solution for avoiding expensive headlight damage and replacement on your vehicle. Made from high impact resistant acrylic,EGR's headlight protectors are a cost effective way to prevent damage to expensive light clusters. The Headlight Protectors are designed to be discrete, blend in perfectly and can be installed securely in seconds. Headlamp Protectors offer protection from stones and other debris yet can be remove quickly (when the bonnet is open) for clean-ups. "

I have a set of the clear protector covers, made of the same flexible stuff as the headlight lenses.

They clip on securely, but are thief-proof because they can only be taken off with the bonnet open.

They're Australian - made by EGR.

You can't really see them unless you look closely - so no macho-image.

But the do actually protect the lights from chips, cracks and scratches from flying stones.

I broke a headlamp on my first Freelander so decided they were the answer.

The ones under discussion so far in this thread don't stop stones at all and make cleaning the headlights a pain.

I have a series as well and have always taken the view that I'd rather just replace a broken lens if I nudge something that straighten out the bodywork as well due to the light guard bending it.

Freelander lights are a bit less exposed though, so I may be talking bollocks in this context!

Has anyone checked the replacement cost of a damaged headlight unit?

i did ..
and have just ordered a set of the EGR's

meant to get some ages ago after having stone chippings hit the front end from a passing car ..
( and the EGR's had been mentioned by yourself )
but at the time couldn't find a retailer .. then forgot about it 'till this thread were posted

I have a set of the black plastic on mine ,they were on when I brought it ,or I might not have put them on .I had them on my last freelander and I used to have to take the front of for the MOT or the tester said the level of light was to low and I must admit I tried them without and the lights did seem brighter ,now on this one some Pollock has put them on wrong so the 2 end bits that go into the front bumper are only just hanging in there ,they should have drilled the holes put the two pieces the protrude out into the bumper then marked the hole on the wing , but that is the main stealers for you.
