lever on fuel pump

Hi Guys, does anyone know what the lever does on the side of the lift pump on my 200tdi? Also what position should the lever be in? Cheers Jim

if you put it in the other position you get 50 extra horses

It also does not matter what position the lever is in as it is usually spring loaded and will return to it's 'parked' position.

But if you fill your fuel filter before fitting it you never need to bleed the system.

That's what I do as the pump never seems to work!!!!

try turning the engine over a wee bit, used to work on the old forklifts i used to work at, basic mech. fuel pump jobbies. at times it felt like there was no pressure being generated, spin them over a bit and could feel a bit coming on, turn over another wee bit and there was full stroke aviable.

If the pump is sitting on cam, then it is already at the peak of it's pump stroke, so it will not work.

The Bosch system on the 200/300tdi engines is self priming, self bleeding system so even with an empty filter, as long as you don't rev it, it should refill and bleed all the air out. The same lift pump is used on other engines in other vehicles which don't have the Bosch system, so it has the lever - it is also a useful tool in diagnosing fuel issues.

By coincidence I cleaned the sedimenter out last night a PITA job, breaking the plastic drain screw in the process :violin: so had to temp fit a 8mm bolt in its place and once it was all back together then found that lift pump lever moves but does stuff all I even turned the engine to make sure the cam was not at full lift but it still did stuff all, no fuel pumped, no resistance just the spring holding it back etc

But as disco said the engine started coughed a bit but kept going

Just wondering if I should get a new lift pump now as it appears to be faulty and this might indicate trouble from it soon.

I bought a new one as mine seemed to not be working, turned out the lever was broken inside.
