Lenient MOT

The MOT in my disco 2 was less than 2 weeks and 200 miles old when I bought it, and so far the following has been replaced / repaired / waiting to be done this weekend, how many are actually MOT failures?

Collapsed UJ in front Prop
Front Discs with 1.5 - 2.0mm lip at edge
CV Boot knackered
Front Lower shock Bush shredded
Front anti roll bar bushes knackered
Rear wiper blade perished

Spose if I were putting the vehicle in to be tested I would be happy, but having just bought it from the garage that did the MOT..................

you could always report it to vosa and tell them you suspect the mot is a tad shady. they will take the vehicle and re-mot it themselves then do the garage that passed it for improper work, possibly striking them off the mot list, causing them to go out of business and making all the staff unemployed, causing misery to their families and possibly losing their homes. or you could just say ah well

Could be that the previous owner knew the MOT guys and got it through on a few wee things.

for most of the items, you could ah well.
but the front prop uj, is a really serious error.

CV boot is fail but the rear wiper I don't hink is because cars do not have to be fitted with them.

shocker bushes and anti roll bar bushes are quite serious really

realistically, this garage is passing cars to sell them which is a big no no. if they are putting dodgy mot's on cars for sale then this is really bad as it could be dangerous. personally i would report them to vosa and get them done. the only downside is that vosa will mot your motor and it could fail on a lot more.

putting it bluntly, i wouldn't want my missus and kids riding around in a motor with a bent mot on it

Kinda lost faith in the vehicle now which is a shame, so thinking about fixing everything up and selling her on, hopefully getting my money back in the process.......

no need to be that drastic, if you aint gonna report the garage just take it for an mot somewhere else then see what it needs. once its got a straight mot on it there is nothing to worry about

Just got back in my defender 90 200 tdi this morning to get it ready to sell and it goes sooooo nicley now I've done so much too it, and the gearing is better suited to the towing I do, but isn't enough space for me, my oppo and my dogs. Perhaps a donor 110 double cab rolling chassis and engine and gearbox swap from mine........but then the extra weight...... can't decide what to do now going to have lie down for a bit. :/

dont sell due to the mot thingy mine just went for its test and past thought great put my mud tyres no looked a the discs and there f**k went to where i had the test done had a kick off like he said thay cant test the breaks which is ture only thing they do is drive it and try see iff it stops and thats it

It's still sposed to go on the ramp, even if they haven't got a 4wd rolling road setup, for inspection.

i know wat your saying but they cant fail some thing they cant test

MOT's are a bit of a payne, but they are all to do with safety, I would rather them fail on inportant things like breaks rather than passing dodgy cars.

The MOT Garage where I used to go only had a 2 wheel rolling road, so they used some sort of inertia guage - drove down the road stamped on the brakes. The vehicle had to pull up straight and decelerate fast enough to pass. These were two old guys who had been performing MOT's since morris minors were new - the downside was that they used this to check the handbrake as well, but they were sypathetic only did it around 5mph.

To be quite honest i wouldnt let the ****s get away with it.


First i would inform them you want some form of compensate for the work that needs doing, and you dont trust them, obviously, so you are choosing another garage to do the work.
I would inform them i had been in touch with the Ministry and see what they say. The Ministry cannot act until you issue a statement asking them too. Most garages know this so even though the Ministry may know of the problem, they will allow say 14 days for the garage to rectify, if not they get ****ed over.

Ive just been through the same with my Disco, and the garage coughed up a cheque to a nominated garage to replace some bits i wasnt happy with.

Dont get mugged off.

It's called a deccelerometer. Still use them where I work if the rolling road can't be used.

I had various little things wrong with my 300tdi which kept cropping up in the months after I'd bought it, but by the time I realised there might be a problem, it was too long since the test for anything to be done about it. Spoke to the dealer about it and their attitude stunk, I'm convinced the car never even went to the test station.
