Land rover 90 steering 1984 2.5D

Hello,

I am after some advice on a steering problem. My vehicle has a 3bolt steering box with power steering.

It has an inconsistent feel to the steering weight. When you start to steer it is heavy, then as I apply more lock it goes light with PAS assistance, but then can go heavy again as further steering lock is applied. Applies in both directions. Suggests inconsistency from PAS. PAS pump belt is correct tension.

Reservoir has enough oil in it. Any advice would be much appreciated before I start taking things apart.

Take the cap off the reservoir and see if it is circulating at different rates with the engine running at various speeds.
If not, you might have a blockage in the feed pipe to the pump, as they have been know to delaminate occasionally.

Check your steering column UJs.

Wd40 on the steering column joints and if it works properly, fit new ones.
Try wd40 on the bottom one first and then you will know what one is causing problem.
