hi newbe on here. i brought a 2001 td4freelander, i have the three amigos and the handbrake light on, does anyone know anywhere for a cheap diagnostic check around birmingham? the guy selling the car said the battery died and the lights just came on.....then flew off in a unicorn lol. i got it dirt cheap anyway, we all have to start somewhere! ive read how it could be a big list of things so maybe best to get the diagnosgics to see if that throws any light on the matter. oh and also any tips, ive blanked the egr valve already as my mpg was soooo bad and its alot better now, so obviously full filter and oil service. anything else i should look for? thanks in advance

Hello again, glad you made it! Many with the diesel freelander do the EGR blanking and clean the inlet manifold which gets pretty gunged up. Air filter is a critical piece too and easy to check/replace. So TDi is the L series Rover motor [Freelander XEDi] and the TD4 is the BMW M47 motor. That's exhausted my knowledge of the diesels! The search facility is very good and easy to use too.

do ur rear brake lights work, if not will be a brake light switch, very common

good that you've already done the egr blank

other things are

bmw style crankcase breather
turbo actuator filter, sits at the back left , only one hose connects to it, check the arrow, cheap from main dealer
look at the vacuum pipes as they can split

also look at the condition of ur turbo intercooler hoses, front left hand side a screw can rub the hose causing a hole

fuel tank cradle can rust

check ur brakes that the front calioers arnt sticking

have u checked the vcu , made sure all ur tyres are the same size make

happy motoring

are good little motors if looked after and very reliable

plenty more advice over in the freelander section and as @htr mentiined do a search and will find a lot of info

owned a freelander td4 for around 7 x years

great motor and was very reliable, never let me down

is urs a manual or auto plse ,

if u get stuck always ask , there's many of us here to help

its a manual, i just replaced the maf sensor and its running soooooo much better, isnt guzzling diesel as bad either so win win. it must be said out of all the cars ive owned and joined whichever forums, this one is second to none with how helpful you guys are! thanks all
