Hi everyone, just bought an 1.8 XEI, (sold as seen), on driving home it developed a really bad knocking unerneath, i stopped straight away and looked unerneath, it was a metal ring about 6 inches in diameter hanging from the propshaft, i now know as a VCU Damper, with only one bolt hanging off it, the other 2 could be anywhere, i tightentened the remaining one up and ordered a set of three from LR (£8.63 inc VAT), the thing still got me home, another 1/2 mile but there was intermittant vibrations from under the seat, get the bolts tomorrow, hopefully this will cure the vibration. Is this a symptom of loose VC damper or should i be looking elsewhere.
:rolly:

you bought a 1.8 Freelander "sold as seen" and you dont know much about cars.

Lord help you.
I hope you have deep pockets and a steep learning curve. :dnfnoob:

I know, must be mad . Should have read the comments on these forums about freelanders, lesson learn't. got it very cheap though if thats any consolation.:( I call it my little project.
Looking forward to getting advice how to fix everything thats wrong with it, one thing at a time, been looking at the forums and quite alot go wrong with them.
Just had it on the ramps at work, (army with a good contract with Landrover thank god) going to replace the VCU support bearings and the damper bolts and see if that does the job.

I have had a similar problem with my TD4, usually when turning slightly, and usually at certain revs.
I found the problem was that the vehicle had been grounded and one of the VCU support bearings was bent almost an inch out of allignment. Once I had replaced both and the UJ bearings it cleared the problem.
Count me in as another idiot who bought a hippo with little knowledge of them!

Phil

VCU Bolts fitted, tightened to correct torque and took it out for a good run, job done thank god.
