It would be handy to have some idea what these faults were for
future negotiations with hire companies:-

Jeep Cherokee in 2 wheel drive on poor tarmac.
Intense juddering from front end and steering wheel (like
unbalanced wheels x 50) at about 80 kph, diengaging drive made no
difference. Stopping or slowing to crawl cured problem, which
repeated itself about once a day, always on poor tarmac. (Vehicle
had done 50,000K.)

How important is "water in fuel" warning, which came and went on
one. Why does it come about and can it be fixed "on the fly"?

<crossposted, but i'm only in rec.driving>

It means that there is water in the fuel :)

I think that most diesels have a water trap in the fuel line before
before the injector pump, at least the Xantia I had did. The water
light came on in that once and the mechanic a couple units down just
loosened the drain at the bottom of the trap and drained it out.

Where the trap is on a Cherokee is anyones guess though.

And was there a manual in any of the three? Nope.

My Dad has a Cherokee, it has a proper tractor style glass water trap on it
with a plastic plug in the bottom.

If you have a look at this you should be able to see if it has water in it
and drain it out if it does.

My Xantia has a water in fuel light which comes on when the weather is wet.
I suspect damp getting in somewhere electric that it shouldn't be because
each time I drained it only diesel came out, and I had the top off and the
filter out each time.

I tried draing the water out of a JCB 3C trap once, but it was full of mud
so the water was a bit reluctant to leave...
