It won't start

I have Brought a 300 tdi auto disco 95M
It will not start. I'm sure the battery is good. It has been running before I brought it.
I'm unsure about the alarm/mob side of things. It didn't come with remotes so unsure if the alarm works or linked out.
The LED on the dash doesn't come on.
All I get is relays on the pax footwell clicking.
What else stops the car from starting?

What is the correct starting procedure for the auto just incase I'm doing something wrong?

sorry i drive a manual but most automatics have to be in park to start and some need the foot brake pressed hope this helps

Just in park for autos unless the switch is cream crackered then it'll start in any gear.
If there's no immobiliser light flashing on dash (mines a 95 and has red symbol of car with key which flashes if immobiliser is stopping play) then I'd start with basics - will it turn over, does it fuel etc.
If not then I'd guess it's power/earth issue or starter gone but i ain't no expert

clicking on the footwell could be your starter gone...

try turning the key at the same time you wack the starter with a hammer, could be the starter just sticking

Lets get down to more precise definitions:

1. When you try to start the car, does the starter motor turn the engine?

2. If not, does it just click?

I don't know alot about automatics but I do know that

you have to make sure that the car is in park (P). Make sure the brake is pressed, and start the engine.

The gearbox must be in P or N before the engine can start. You do not need to press the brake pedal on european-spec cars, to start the engine.

Err I thought the reason you need to press the brake pedal so that when you put it into drive it doesn't start moving before your ready.
Didn't mean to imply it wouldn't start without doing it

However

The engine will not turn over, The only clicking is in the pax foot well, the alarm module looks as if it has been bypassed, there are link wires in that area. The LED on the dash does not come on. The central locking doesn't work. I will pull the dash out to get to the syder module to see if that has been linked out.
Have knocked the starter motor.
Is it worth checking the switch on the auto box?

That's correct. You can start it without pressing the brake, but, as you imply, its a good idea to press the brake before changing from P to D...I guess North Americans aren't bright enough to think of doing that so they have to press the brake before starting
