I had a problem yesterday with my 300 TDi stopping for no apparent reason, at first i thought it was the fuel solenoid so i rewired that, then someoen suggested that there may be air getting in from the fuel filter where i changed it durning the service on Monday. Anyway filter changed and it is worse i stopped 9 times on the way home from work if i leave it a minute it starts and runs for a bit then dies again. the only other symptom apart from the feeling of lack of fuel is when it restarts the injector pump is rattling or ticking like a very badly adjusted tappet if that makes sense. Any way i got it home and now have a 50 mile round trip to work every day in a car that wont work can anyone help?

Also and its a long shot, but make sure that the lift pump is ok. I believe that when these start to fail, they can make a ticking sound

sedimenter is fine and the sound is definately not from the lift pump thanks for the replies

I think it will be the lift pump too, part No is ERR5057
if it's failing it will be starving the fuel pump of fuel so that's what might be making the ticking noise.

Could be air in the fuel from the sender unit at the tank, lift inspection hatch under boot carpet and check condition of copperpipes within nylon housing. They corrode and split nylon which lets air in.

dont think it is the spider putting on a new lift pump today (hopefully) I will report back

It could be something as simple as air getting in the system, are you sure when you put the sedimentor back on that the rubber seal didn't twist a little?

you can test your lift pump before removing it though...

just take the hose that goes from the lift pump to the fuel filter (remove on the fuel filter side), turn the ignition key and you should have fuel shooting off that hose, if its just dripping, you've found your problem

I had exactly the same prob, so I cleaned the sedimentor and didn't notice that the seal was twisted when I put it back on so it still kept on cutting out. I thought it was something else causing the cut outs when it was actually a problem I had created myself:doh:.

it's worth a look as it doesn't cost anything and only takes 5 mins.

Good call :p

new lift pump fitted no different starts a bit then dies going to take out fuel filter etc tomorrow bypass the lot with clear fuel hose see if that helps still getting a rapid clicking from the fuel injector pump any other ideas gratefully accepted will bypass the sedimentor too to try and rule out every thing
