Is the clock just a clock?

Now while I was stuck in traffic it got me thinking?

That's a big LCD screen for just a clock! There must be another use for it?

Does it connect to radio? Or anything else?

Just a bit strange and waste really!

There are 3 clocks that fit to the clock "compartment". One is fitted with a 4pin plug. This one is just a clock and the LCD is quite small. There is one with an 8pin plug that also show radio info + clock and the LCD panel is bigger(2x16).

And there is one trafficmaster thing that maybe some from the UK can explain more about and if im not wrong where only fitted to some Rover's.

Hmm ok mine is the 2x16 I think, in guessing that since I have an aftermarket radio then the radio info function is useless... I wander if it's possible to display something else insted!

And the "not a clock II - Work in progress" not yet fitted to mine.

All i got now is a empty 8pin shell and just got the 2x16 OLED in the mail a few days ago. But it will show turbo boost, water temp, oil temp and wideband air/fuel(from where EGR is fitted) on the L-series when done.

This sounds cool - is this a "shed development" or something you've bought in? Links would be good.

Mine used to display a clock (not sure which timezone or indeed planet the time was from!) and radio 'stuff' - but now all I get is a few dashes and dots!

nice job....

+1

some one on here did a write up of how to fix that, but I tried and did not succeed ,and that is on the wife's car, and I do not know how but the colour of the back light has changed now it is a bright orange. looks like I am going to have to buy her another one, must say though the part that did not work is now working and the part that worked now does not .

TBH I think its a Mickey Mouse bit of kit. I'd rather change it for something that shows me lots of very interesting (although mainly useless) information and get a stereo with its own display including clock.

Its gonna be custom made by myself. I do this stuff for job/fun/hobby and im more than average interested in electronics. A PIC18 microcontroller will be the heart of the system and its just a case of sewing it all together.

For reading the boost i will just do a analog to digital conversion(ADC) from the MAP sensor(aka measuring voltage). Water and oil will be read by measuring resistance and the UEGO sensor will be read digital via a inline UEGO controller. I will also add an interrupt routine so i can display messages from a double DIN Android unit. The OLED display is a very good display for its job. OLED means the letters being showed is actually lighting up and not the backlight as on LCD displays. This makes em much much clearer to read both night, day and from every angles.

Dont mind the greasy protective layer covering the OLED:

You aren't one of the old Norwegian hackers that are also playing with the P38 by any chance?:)

Im definitely not old :D and i have'nt done anything to a P38 before. But you made me a little curious now. Who and what?

That looks impressive! Once you have it all wired up and ready to go I'm sure a few people on here will be willing to pay for something like that!

That looked interesting, Grumpy Gel. Thanks for the link, im never on the Defender side of LZ.

It might be possible that i can do a kit for somebody else if theyre interested. But it has to be the L-series FL and they would need to put it together on there own and it would need to be a group thing.

There was a a lot of interest in a paddle shift controller i made for a getrag gearbox and i did make it for a lot of ppl(+-100 units). But it turned out to be a lot of work for not a lot of money as Norway is a very expencive country to live in compared to a lot of other countrys. So its not really worth my time.
