Ignore me! My stoopid iPad isn't showing all the posts. But they're still there;)

lol
i have removed offside driveshaft and checked the inside as much as poss and looks ok,

would naff gearbox oil make it lock on every 3/3.5 turns???? cuz what i was thinking is, put old oil back in for test purpose and start car with offside shaft removed to see if it still locked, if it did then take ird completely out and try and bung gearbox side up then do same again????

any thoughts, just dont want hassle of ripping ird out and not having a idea of how to tell if its that that has gone as from what i can see no damage to anything that can be seen

cheers

Naff gear oil won't do much at all! It certainly won't lock it solid! Something has to be broken to do that!

ok so now i've put the oil back in started car and still locking up in the ird, from the offside driveshaft removed, so now its a ird unit out, once out what should i be looking for???

cheers

something broken in ird or final drive of gear box unless it feels diff related which could be distinguishe by letting both front wheels rotate

hello

what bit is the final drive of gearbox?? everyone been saying pointing to ird, ird is nearly out now i thought it would be obvious something was wrong once its out lol

cheers

final drive is behind ffont gear box case ,what ird plugs into ,you cant tell till irds out and see if it turns freely or not or box does/doesnt etc

ok now the ird is out and all the gears look fine no chewed up bits, looked thru the filler plug and the drain plug and nothing seems chewed,

if i put gear box oil in will it leak from where the ird goes into it???

so i was thinking start the car and see if it locks or judders ???

cheers

If the ird has been removed from the auto (jatco on the Freelander 1) then the auto oil will leak out of the auto's hole the ird splines slide into. It's not good to run an auto without oil or with low oil.

cant see any signs thst the ird has gone

cheers

If you look in the auto's hole where the ird slots in you'll see 2 sets of splines. The smaller at the rear goes to the near side wheel driveshaft. This should turn easily I think. If you turn the larger outer spines with the auto not in park, then the smaller of the 2 splines coming out of the auto into the torque convertor will turn. Put it in park and they won't, and you feel the spines stop after turning a small amount – you’ll feel/hear it lock into park. So copying this could help. But that’s assumes the auto I’ve tried this on isn’t stuck in gear somehow.

hello

ok will try that tomo but as it looks think the auto box it buggered so it may just get sold of in bits lol

cheers

not had chance to get under car today, but what i did get was an old ird that shattered the casing from a bloke down the road, so i have removed all the gears and kept the section of casing and the 2 shafts that go into the ird.

so tomorrow will put it into auto box fill with oil (shouldn't leak out)and start her up n see if it locks, my thinking is if it locks with only shafts in its the auto box if it dont that its the ird that was at fault.

any thoughts on this method ???
