Was under my Freelander today changing the anti roll bar bushes, when I noticed an oil leak on the ird where the prop shaft connects. See attached pic. Anyone know if this a simple job to repair? I'm hoping it's just a seal that needs replacing. I had a search in the forums but couldn't find anything on it. Also tried searching google for a part number for the seal but couldn't find anything. Anybody else had to do this and know the part number/s required?

Cheers all.

Oh and replacing the bushes didn't stop my knocking. Drop links next methinks. :)

remove prop and bolts holding ird output bearing housing ,check to see if seal is leaking, doesnt look so on photo if it is replace if not leave it,seal betweeen housings (which looks more likely leak) with rtc silicone sealant replace, check level of oil and breather isnt blocked on top of ird ,

since you have two flat unbroken surfaces ,just apply around with corking gun and fit as soon as possible, adviseable to use oil resistant silicone or as resistant as possible ,o rings are poor seal sometimes i allways silicone as well

Try tightening it up a little and check fluid level and clean it and keep a eye on it. It dosent look to bad, lossen the upper bolts a little first then tighten the bottom 2 first then the tops ones. And check the vent for it to see if pluged , could just be pressure build up

Thanks. :)

Wow great and speedy advice guys. Think I'll tighten it up and clean it up first as Fur Trapper advises. Then if that doesn't help, I think I'll be opening up and replacing seal and applying silicon. Thanks for that jm and also thanks for photos of seal Hippo.

Anyone know the part number for the o'ring seal. Looked on microcat but can't see it.

Cheers fellas.

Maybe with all the offroad and wading you do maybe the vent plugged?
Have you removed the gaffer tape from your doors yet:D:D:D:D:D

TYX100500 is the part number for the O ring seal, on the IRD pinion. I paid abotu £6 from main dealer. If you look in the pic you'll see the O ring is located on a section of metal that sits against another, like a circle in a circle. If this seal fails tightening it up probably won't fix it.

Thats a IF but could be where the bolt pattern gasket is and is where the silicon goes up against the shoulder

I thought the plastic type gasket thing was there for the 2 faces to mate ok, un not an oil seal. When taking mine out there was no oil past the O ring if I remember correctly.

when proper tightened with help with the sealing of it. The O-ring is a seal also but is kinda like a damper like. meaning to take up clearance between the machine surfaces. without it the would do a hammer effect from torque and road vibrations .

silicon goes on shoulder where the plastic gasket goes will help seal better like james said

Good :)

Btw the STC50550 is the LR automotive flexi gasket sealant.

Just seeing alot of people lately using Tiger Seal style silicon sealant as a gasket, its a nightmare :)
