If you thought installing wing chequer plates using a nut and bolt rather than a pop rivet was a little tricky, then installing the bonnet plate could make you kick a puppy.

Just finished mine and thought I'd share a method I devised for securing (and not loosing) the chequer plate bolts.

When you drill the three holes through the front of the bonnet you'll find that there's no place to attach the nut underneath (or a wrench to the nut for that matter) because there's a frikking metal brace in the way. So:

  1. Drill the bolt size hole from the top of the bonnet as you normally would.
  2. Find the centre line on the underside of the bonnet and drill a pilot hole upwards.
  3. Through the underside pilot hole, drill a hole large enough to fit a 10-12mm socket through.
With the hole in place it's time to fix the nut and bolt. This is tricky because you can't get your fingers into the underside hole to balance the washer whilst loosely fitting the nut to the bolt. Here's a method that should help:

  1. Superglue the washer to the underside of the nut.
  2. Fix some cotton thread around the nut and washer and leave plenty of line. This is just in case the nut and washer decide to get lost in the brace cavity.
  3. Place nut into socket (washer will prevent nut falling all the way into the socket).
  4. Fix and tighten.
Hope that helps someone.

Nothing worse than loosing your nuts, hey.

Ok, I'll take a picture of a washer, superglued to a nut, with a piece of white cotton wrapped around them both and upload it.

Tell you what, I think I have a pic of that somewhere, save you the hassle..........

there you go:

Haha, that's funny. One of the many reasons I log in after a long day at work.:D

If you dont want to rivit it for the pro land rover look lol just use rive nuts and thread lock.

I would also advice putting some rubber under the panels as mine dont and you can sometimes hear them vibrating against the wing and bonnet.
