I know there are lots of details on replacement and blanking off egr etc. but I think I have an interesting problem...

Disco 2001 TD5 99k running poorly so left it into my local mechanic. Did test and found fault msg for injector 3. Cleaned a few filters etc. and running improved but not back to its best. Mechanic did not want to touch injector because of cost and fact that it is a main dealer job. However, he found that the hose to ERG had a clamp to block it. This sounded a bit dodgy but all previous work was done by main dealer. Anyway his suggestion was that before I look at spending money on the injector that I should replace the EGR. From all the info on this site it seems the best options is to blank this with an aftermarket kit. Does clamping the hose do the same job? Should I buy a new valve or get a blanking kit? Or should I do nothing and accept that my disco is getting a bit old and uses a little more fuel and is a bit slower.....any advice or suggestions welcome, rgds J

Well if it helps I completely removerd my EGR valve a few days ago on my 2001 TD5 and used an after market blanking kit (£28 off fleabay)as mine decided that it was getting old and down on power. The difference is remarkable, going much better and sounds like it can breathe again...
I personally wouldn't just clamp off the hose could lead to more problems, blank it at the exhaust manifold with the kit, only a 30 minute job if this is what you decide to do.
Have fun!!

Thanks for the feedback. trying to figure out next steps and seems best option is to get the kit and ask mechanic to do the swap. brgds John

I may be wrong, but simply clamping one of the hoses that controll the valves opening and closing cant be a good thing. The valve may well be suck half closed causing your problems.

Get a full EGR blanking kit, and then just blank off the small controll pipes.

Even if this doesnt solve your problem, it rules it out, and getting rid of the EGR system is much better for the running of your engine.

yes, it is getting old. but 99000 miles is really not a lot for a td5.
as above, get the egr blanked properly.

Replacing seals and washers on the injectors is an easy job (replacing an injector requires linking to test kit for the ECU to recognise the new one). However neither job is a main dealer only, doing the washers is a DIY job, no special tools required. See this link for great advice on both
www.discovery2.co.uk/Workshop articles.

I have also removed the fan and directed the rocker breather tube into a catch tank and put a cork in the air inlet pipe. Might as well let the car breathe as well as it can.

Currently on 230,000 miles and running well on original engine.

It would be worth checking the red plug on the ecu for signs of oil contamination before you do anything else.

If your mechanic thinks that undoing a rocker cover, rocker shaft and then an injector clamp is a difficult job I would seriously consider finding another mechanic.

Your Disco is still relatively new so don't write it off yet :). I blanked off my EGR last year (Disco 2 TD5, 1999 T, 176K miles). Since then the car feels a little more responsive and I've been getting on average 50 - 60 miles more out of a tank of diesel (worth that alone). I'm a desk jockey by trade so not too familiar with spanners and screwdrivers yet I was easily able to blank the EGR using the steps shown on www.discovery2.co.uk. For the money its worth doing even if it isn't your problem. Just remember to inform your insurers as it is classified as a modified vehicle.
