Hazard light connectors 2.JPG
Hi all,

I know this subject has been covered by many, however I have never found a solution for which I have.

I bought my 1989 110V8 about 4 months ago. Never had an issue with the indicators and noticed the hazard light switch was never connected. It's always been something I was going to get round to fixing.

anyway, as I said the indicators have always worked, until last weekend. Both have stopped working.

I have checked the Relay, which looks ok. Also I have put live to the switch connectors where the hazard light was fitted and the indicators do work, so I know it's not the loom. Also all the fuses appear to be fine too.

Some pictures of the connector harness for the hazard light switch below, but as said previously these were not connected. Also the permanent live is not connected to the block, neither is the red/black wire connected to the loom and I have no idea where the earth wire has gone, but can't see it behind the speaker hole.

I'm assuming to get the hazard lights working I need to put the purple live back into the connector and add a new earth wire in. But I can't imagine this will solve the indicator issue. Being that they worked before without these wires connected.

Does anyone have an idea of where the red/black wire should be connected, it has a large spade connector.

Any ideas what the fault could be?

Hi Mojo247,

I haven't taken it apart to see if there is an issue, as the horn and dip switch are working fine.

Would a multi-meter work on the indicator stalk and any idea on what I would need to do, to test it?

Not sure but FlyingPete may know?

What I do know is that the connectors on the back of the stalk switch have a knack of working loose or getting nice and green!

The thin wires with spade connectors might feed the lamp inside the switch. I think the purple is the key to your problem. try connecting it to the solid green.

This could be a good time for you to learn how to read wiring diagrams because it would make life so much more easier don't try guessing could potentially cause another problem. Get a test light check your getting a ignition feed at the switch. The black red seems like to me it could be the warning light check with test light. The fact that your indicators aren't working seems to be a bad earth or faulty relay both quite common on defenders

Zeaphod I connected the live to solid green and now the indicators work. Only problem now is getting the hazard lights working properly. I assume the purple live should be in the connector. And will need to wire in an earth. But not sure where the red/black wire should be connected to. I might have to take the whole dash apart to see what has happened, as there is not enough to view through the speaker hole.

Morgan1994 I have tried to find a wiring diagram online, but couldn't find one for a 1989 defender. I don't suppose you have a link or know where I can get the diagram from?

Thanks for all your help, it's really appreciated!

Have a look at these, your wiring will be similar. The hazard switch when off connects the purple to the green and when on connects both sides of the indicators together to the relay.
