Indicator cancel issue

I have just replaced the indicator switch and stalk. It feels a lot smoother and more positive than the old one, but I still have the same issue as before. If I indicate left and turn left, it stays on and cancels as the wheel returns to straight ahead, as it should. If I indicate right, however, it sometimes cancels itself before I have finished turning the wheel and I have to re-apply to keep the indicator on through the manoeuvre. (Imagine a right turn: indicate right, turn wheel, indicator self-cancels, have to re-apply to keep it going throughout the manoeuvre.) It was doing this with the old switch, and I thought a new one would cure it.

The new switch includes the cancelling mechanism and the blue ring that engages with the tabs on the steering wheel, so the problem must be somewhere else. The only thing I can think of is that the tabs on the wheel are wrong (although they look to be properly set at 6 and 12 o'clock, and they seem to be fixed to the wheel with no adjustment possible). I can't think of what else it could be. Any ideas?

my steering wheel only has one tab which is part of the steering wheel, my old wheel had two, some have a separate metal collar... they are a royal pia when not working.

Mine has two tabs at 6 and 12 o'clock. They are on a metal ring that seems to be clamped around the metal boss of the wheel. They won't shift even with moderate pressure, so I assume they are fixed in place. Needless to say, when I was 'operating' the switch before I fitted it (click the lever, rotate the blue ring) it was working perfectly in both directions.

some stalks use this on the colum

maybe try re seating yours ( the blue ring has locating arrows for your tabs x 2) maybe one went in and the other missed, would explain your symptoms?

No, it's all together properly with both tabs in the blue ring slots and the little arrow pointing left to the switch. That is the part that is fitted to the wheel. Thanks anyway.

My 85 90 has the same issue, works properly turning left but cancels turning right and usually a quarter of the way around a circle. I click it on again and it just cancels again. Never looked at it, i just live with it, at least it works.

Maybe the blue ring is 180 out?

It’s likely to be the alignment of the stalk, if it is not right then the deflection of the rubber shroud is enough to make it cancel when you are indicating right and turning the wheel to the right, rather than turning it back.
Remove the rubber shroud from the column so it hangs on the stalk, it will most likely then work OK.
If that is the case then you need to bend the stalk downwards slightly so that it doesn’t stretch the rubber shroud so much as you indicate right.

Never really understood indicators
Why do you need a green flashing light on the dash to tell you which way you are going, just look out of the window ?

I had the exact same issue. Either cancelling too soon or not at all. Very embarrassing to realise your indicators are still on long after turning.
So I went old school and removed the tabs. I do the indicating and cancelling myself.......I soon got used to it

How bizarre - mine is exactly the same and I blamed the switch - bought a new one and the same again - I was actually wondering if I have the screw to tight? And it's effecting it

Don’t tell me this now! Father Christmas brought me a new switch to cure this issue, this was also due to the hi-beam flash not working anymore. So at least I’ll get one issue sorted.

Check all the earth points at the lamps ... have you done the wiring upgrade ?

Yeah, done all that. Definitely a dud switch. Just hoping that the indicator issue is sorted when I put the new switch on, should be, it worked perfect before but when I last had it apart I noticed that the blue collar was starting to look a bit beaten up!

Yeah, done all that. Definitely a dud switch. Just hoping that the indicator issue is sorted when I put the new switch on, should be, it working perfect before but when I last had it apart I noticed that the blue collar was starting to look a bit beaten up!

Yes, that’s what mine does. I was rather hoping that a new switch would cure it. I can live with it, of course, not the end of the world, but would prefer the whole thing to work properly if possible.

No, definitely correct and double-checked. The little arrow is pointing left, to the switch body.

Thanks, will try this. I doubt it is the cause, as the click of the stalk locating in position is very positive and unlikely to be moved by the rubber of the shroud, but it’s an easy thing to try. Cheers.

I had a Citroen 2CV with a simple left/right lever and a ‘clack-clack’ to let you know it’s was on. I got used to it and actually liked it, and manually cancelling was easy to do. I just feel that if Mr Land Rover provides me with self-cancelling, I want it to work.
