I left the Range Rover for a few days this week and when I went back to it the fob wouldnt unlock the doors. It was lighting up when the buttons were pushed but nothing was happening.
I unlocked the door with the key and the car wouldnt start,

''Engine immobilised. Press key''

After persistanly pushing the fob buttons, unlocking and locking the door, it finally burst into life.

I took it a run for gas and the fob was working fine when stopped but this morning it was back to sitting in the car pushing buttons for 10mins until the immobiliser went off.

Will this just be the batterys in the fob going flat or is there any reason why the car doesnt recognise the signal after being left overnight?

Sounds like you are suffering from the old type RF receiver problem. It is well documented on the site. You need to change the receiver to the latest version. Typically they cost around £140 but some people have hot them cheaper of ebay.

bought a 2nd hand one off ebay so Ill see if that works before buying the all singing all dancing new version.

There is a BT substaion very near me but the car has been doing this for a while and slowly getting worse until today when I almost got locked in at the local dump. Turned it off to open the boot then the bugger wouldnt disarm for 10mins. They were shutting the gates when it decided to fire up.

I take it the alarm is gonna go nuts when I attempt to get into the boot to remove the RF unit since I can disarm it?

RF Reciever is just a receiver - the alarm is triggered via the BeCM....

You can unplug and plug in to your hearts content.

EDIT:
Just re-read your post - yes if you can't disable the alarm it will sound when you open a door or tailgate....using the key in the door lock should disarm the alrm though - it just won't reset the imobiliser if the car was superlocked using the remote buttons and the EKA wasn't entered.

I always lock it with the fob, thats the thing, once it finally works its fine and the fob will lock and unlock the doors. Its just when the car is left for a period of time it wont disarm.

Plus the central locking doesnt work with the key or from inside when the fob isnt working??

If my memory serves me right (which it may not given that it is 36°c outside and I am full of beer) there are 3 RF rxer models. Each variant is marked by a coloured dot. I believe the green dot was the original followed by a light blue dot and then by a dark blue dot. No doubt someone will correct me if I am wrong.

Well I changed the batteries in the fob last night, no change so left it at that.

Out to it just now after work, no change. Opened door with the key and dash message ''key lockout''

Sh@t m'self, put key in the igniton and it started first time???

Is this anything to do with me changing the batteries in the fob?

If I leave the keys in the ignition at the first click, will that keep the immobiliser disabled until my RF receiver comes?

Just read up about ''freindly resynchronisation''??

Am I right in thinking that if I cant get the immobiliser off by pushing the fob, if I remove and reinstall the batteries in the fob, open the door with the key and insert the key into the ignition, the immobiliser with disarm?

Could be handy if thats the case...

You need the RF receiver mkIII, which has a GREEN dot on the side. It's also worth checking when you get it that it is a mkIII and not an old one in a new box.
Until you have that the computer will be a nuisance at inconvenient times, since only the mkIII completely filters all spurious radio signals and actually lets the computer go to sleep :)
