Hi everyone,

Ive taken my land rover to the garage as the key got stuck in the ignition, i was told by the mechanic that i would need a new ignition barrel at some point as its a common fault, my questions is, Can you get a second hand barrel and have it programmed to the car, or do i need to buy it new?

You don't say what model you have, but if it's a proper key, then you just need a new lock and keys. If it's after 2001 with the teardrop keys, then you need to swap the transponder from the old keys into the new keys.

Hi mate it’s a freelander 2 2007 model.
 
Not sure I can picture the problem here. No key to get stuck in barrel unless it is a 2007 Freelander 1 which does exist.
 
It doesn't have a traditional ignition key, it uses a motorised dock and a fob system.
So what is the issue with it?
The key got stuck in the ignition, when I took it to the garage they said the only way to fix it was to remove the pin that holds the key in, now the battery keeps draining and my central locking doesn’t work. So I’m looking at replacing the docking unit, so I was wondering if I can buy a second hand one and have it programmed to my car

It's probably the fob itself that is the issue. The fobs have little catches on the edges which wear and prevent the locking pawl from releasing. I've no idea what pin the garage are talking about, but there's no pin locking the fob in. It's just 2 tiny catches (called pawls), one on each side of the dock.
The battery will go flat if the fob is docked, as the vehicle electrical systems remain powered while it's in there.

Normally the way to remove the fob, is to push it in to make it eject, but when your hear the motor try to release, gently pull on the fob. This is normally enough to get it to unstick from the locking pawls. Sometimes it takes a few tries, but it should come out eventually. Obviously the battery needs to be charged before trying to get it out.
