Idling well but dies on acceleration.

2 1/4 petrol with emission control stuff if that makes a difference.

Was working perfectly two days ago but tried to go for a drive this morning and can only touch the accelerator a tiny bit before the engine dies. The only way to get it much above idle is to use the choke.

Used suggestions from similar problems other people have had: changed condensor, spark plugs, HT leads, coil (new one made it worse somehow so changed back). Tried different timing marks and fixed points gap.

Cleaned out sediment bowl and gauze filter (there was small amount of crap in bowl) and have removed inline fuel filter.

Thinking back the rubber washer thing that the sediment bowl goes onto was a bit cracked and MIGHT be sucking air in but it wasn't that bad.

Tried fiddling with carb but doesn't seem to have made much difference.

The only thing I can think to do is take out the drivers seat and check the fuel line near the tank in case it's sucking air in there but again that seems unlikely.

I'm a bit worried I've mucked up timing/points/other things but it's hard to tell when it won't go..

My S3 did this, changed the fuel tank filter, like a cone shaped wire gauze, and all was good. I'd take the tank off and clean any ****e out of it too .. Mine had had a new tank fitted and within a couple of weeks the accumulated dust and ****e of years on the shelf blocked the gauze completely. Gave exactly the same symptoms as yours .. ;)

If I recall there's a cap on the fuel tank, unscrew it and pull out the fuel pickup .. there should be a cone of gauze on the end .. ;)

Hope it's as simple for you as ours was!

Yes. Easy way is to remove uptake pipe only two screws and its at the bottom of that. Very crude filter but it does work.

I just had a look and don't seem to have a filter there...

At the bump near the end of the pickup there is a small bit of gauze but it seems like the pipe has been extended a bit so the gauze is just left over from that. The tank says "made in Canada" on it so maybe the pipe had to be longer to reach the bottom of the aftermarket tank?

There should be a cone shaped gauze on that lol. Blocked lines then possibly.

Fixed it! Been at it all afternoon and for the last hour but finally done it!

I used a trick I'd read about a while ago. Basically a quick way of getting the carb to suck crap out the jets is to take the air hose off then simultaneously jam on the throttle and cover the air intake completely on the carb. Didn't think it would work but it seems to have done the trick.

Now I can't decide whether I should put all of the original plugs, HT leads etc. back in so I can keep my spares. The old plugs look decent and just have slight fuel contamination, possibly because I was using the choke to help me limp home this morning.

Great tip - just worked for me! Thanks....
