Just had a call from the Wife - the car has broken down on the M62 again! She said it started to lose power - then she noticed the "red lights" were on and the temperature had shot up!
She pulled over on to the hard shoulder and is waiting for the AA. I asked her to look under the bonnet and she has confirmed that the fan belt is not there.

My main question and concern is - is there any hope for the engine if she has seized it? I don't know how far she went with no belt but if the engine has ground to a halt due to the excessive heat build up I don' hold out much hope for it unless anyone can advise otherwise?

It never rains but it pours - it has just had a new radiator and viscous fan - surely the garage would not have put the old belt back on?

Dunno, but I reckon you may have a case against the garage.

it may be allright if she stopped it herself it it stopped itself £1000 for another engine as gratch says garages got some responsibilty

Well, the Disco is back home. I haven't looked into it thoroughly yet but I can see that the drive belt is snarled up around everything and the "ACE" pump has imploded leaving the pulley and spindle resting against the fan shroud.

I am assuming the bearing has seized and the constant pressure from the drive belt has caused it to rip the spindle from the pump housing.

I have to say I am surprised as there was no noise evident and am I right in thinking that the bearing is constantly lubricated by the power steering fluid?

I don't know what other damage has been done but just addressing what I can see is going to empty my pockets of cash I just don't have :(.

I love my Disco but I have to be honest it is literally bankrupting me not to mention leaving the wife and children stranded on several occasions.

To cap it all the MOT is now due and I know for a fact that at least two "ACE" pipes are leaking - I think my "Disco days" are numbered :(.

As I see it I have two options - bin the "ACE" system and fit a conversion kit - too expensive; or try and find a replacement pump and renew the leaking pipes - too expensive.

As a last resort I could fit a second hand "ACE" pump to keep me mobile until MOT time or failing that fit an "ACE" conversion pulley - if anyone out there has either one of these and is able to let them go at "family man" money I would be most interested in hearing from you.

Thanks and all the best,Will.

Is there any way to bye pass the ac pump with a shorter belt to drive everything else?

That is a good point - I had not considered that. Assuming there is no other damage that would get me mobile again. I will try some suppliers tomorrow and see if such a belt exists.

Many thanks,Will :).
Take a strong string and fix it around everything the right way and mark it. then measure it to get the length of the belt.
should help you get the right length then

I'd be going back to the garage who did the fan and rad... Surely they are liable for damage caused by there neglegance.. Ok I know that doesnt help the leaky pipes, but it would solve the pump.

Sounds like the ac bearing and shaft let go how would the garage be liable, if they did not work on the ac

is there some confusion here between ac and ace ?

air con aint necessary , but i would have thought fancy suspension would have to be working for mot

It could be bad luck that this has failed just after being fixed....
However, there is also a question about it being over-tensioned, or somehow misaligned.

That said, if you knew it was leaking, can you be certain it had not run out of fluid and cooked the pump?

Proving whether or not the garage or to blame, let alone getting a garage to bear even a portion of the costs is going to be very difficult.

However, speaking to them (in a non-accusatory way, keep onside till you need to get grumpy) can't do any harm can it?

Good luck finding a solution.

iF ITS BEEN HOT YOURE BIGEST CONCERN COULD BE A CRACKED HEAD AROUND £1000 NEW.
THE BORE WOULD CLEAN UP AND RE RING

I think your ace pump has seized due to lack of lubrication wich has caused a major failure
The red light she saw was probaly the ace warning light, ihave travelled in my defender td5 and had a sudden loss of power and i had not noticed it was getting hot so the ecu reduced the power saving me blowing it up.
so hopefully for you just replace the pump with a non ace pully fingers crossed you should be ok

Hi folks, just to clarify - it is the ACE pump we are talking about and it was not leaking prior to failure.
The garage did put the old belt back on because I did not ask for a new one :confused:
I accept that there is such a thing as coincidence but I am wondering if they have had to put extra tension on the old belt to fit it and this has put the strain on the ACE pump :confused:
In any event I can't prove it and I am stuck - there is no way the garage will admit liability.
Suppliers are telling me that I cant just bypass the ACE pump with a shorter belt and will have to fit either a pump or conversion pulley - can anyone confirm this?

Thanks,Will.

Thanks for that Pat, I hope you are right.

It's a possibility that the belt might have been replaced by the garage. It's also a possibilty that if it was replaced they may have fitted the incorrect belt as there are several different ones depending on what the vehicle has fitted. If too smaller belt was used it could have put too much pressure on the ace pump and contributed/caused its failure.

I know for a fact that at least two "ACE" pipes are leaking

The Pump itself doesn't have to be leaking to run dry.

It would still seem to me that that the theory above is most likely. ACE fluid low, pump runs dry and dies, belt thrown and then everything else.

Trouble is, do you invest in new pump, and fixing pipes, or a removal kit and kill the lot, just to find the engine is cooked too?

It needs an assessment from someone who knows what they are doing before you can decide which way to go.
