Is this an acceptable amount of ****e on the I.R.D drain plug magnet??

I have no idea if or when the oil has ever been changed before

My '98 2.0TDi had a bit less after 95000 miles. I changed the oil for Swepco 70/90 as I had some left over from my Porsche 944 days. Yes, I did check with LR technical who said if you can afford it it 's the dogs.

Mine probably had half that amount @70,000 when It had it's first ever oil change , Looks like yours has never been changed and long overdue .

My IRD recently went bang in dramatic style (roughly every turn of a wheel resulted in a huge bang from it) and needed to be lifted to get it back home. After removing the rear propshaft/VCU it drove without the bangs but there was a noticable knocking. The IRD is currently being rebuilt. When I removed the draion plug it looked like this (sorry for focus)...

The 'shavings' look similar to yours, but mine also had a lot of sludge stuck to it. The oil also came out looking very metalic in colour. Mine's a '99 2.0D thats done 137,000KMs (whats that 85,000 miles). I think most of the damage to mine was done if the 2 days leading up to it going when we had 4 adults on board and did about 600KMs (400 miles) up in the mountains with a rear tyre that was slightly down on air and went unnoticed. Bugger.
