Hi to everyone, I'm trying to learn to do some basic maintenance to my Defender 90 Td5. I are already succeeded in changing the gearbox and differential oil.

Now I bought the engine oil and filters and I want to go ahead. Do you know some videos or guides explaining how to do it step by step?

Thanks

Have a look in the how to's, busters guides are very good. I changed mine as soon as I got it, should take less than an hour. Don't think your gonna do it without getting oil all over ya tho :D

Have a good 10 minute or so drive before hand to get the oil nice and warm, it will pour out alot quicker.

Make sure you're not tired when you do it or you'll forget to put the sump plug back in before refilling :boink:

Thanks for the replies, I did not see the step by step busters's guides, they will certainly be useful. The work does not seem difficult. In Td5 however, there are two oil filters, to be more sure of how to operate is there a guide like that made on a Td5?

Thanks

Check out youtube, just type in Defender oil & Filter change there are loads of short video's on there. Its a very easy job, usually takes me about seven minutes to do mine. I think what you have done already is more difficult.
Good luck

Hi! Today I bought a 5W40 full sint engine oil and in this days I want to do the work. Sincerly I looked on YouTube typing "Defender oil filter change" but didn't find any video explaining the procedure on a Td5.

Anyhow I found this:
www.discovery2.co.uk / Oil and Filter change

Thank and wish me good luck

How much oil did you buy? The TD5's do hold more oil than your average car. From memory it's just under 7.5 litres.

Or you can take it to a Land Rover dealership, undo your trousers, bend over and assume the position.

This is not recommended.

If only one could get away so lightly. It's the excision of one's wallet and the contents of one's bank account that really hurts.

Just make sure the rotor filter spins freely and dont overtighten the two 10mm cap bolts of you will strip the threads. Some of the cheaper pattern rotors need a tad shaving off the central bronze bearing as they wont spin when you tighten the cover down. You should hear the rotor winding down for 10 seconds or so after switching the engine off. If not it is binding in the housing and wont be doing its job.

The spin on filter only needs to be hand tight. Smear the rubber sealing ring with engine oil and pour some oil into the empty filter before tightening. It will come off much easier when you next change it.

Here I am ... It's done. Unfortunately removing one of the the oil filter cover's bolt I heard a tac.. and the thread were no more able to tighten the bolt. I had to ask for help to a mechanic...

I tried. But I think it was not my fault as the previous mechanic that did the work tightened the bolt to much
