This is more for the newbies. (and for those directing newbies to the right page)

The other day, I found that my handbrake wasn't to its usual standards (not good when your trialing on a 1:3 hill!)

did some poking around on here, and even buster bus had no pictures of the adjuster and cable clamping positions (even though he does mention them in his handbrake renewal section: http://www.landyzone.co.uk/lz/f41/handbrake-shoes-renewal-98882.html)

This is how I did it. Its not gospel, so to those who know better, please feel free to add criticism

Anyway, here you go:
1. here are the tools you'll need:

  • 12mm spanner
  • 19mm spanner (notched out closed end is best but can be done with standard)
  • WD40
  • long nose pliers (if you don't have the notched out 19mm spaneer)

CHOCK MOTOR AND TAKE HANDBRAKE OFF!

2. If your handbrake is really slack you'll need to readjust your cable position; get under the motor with 19mm spanner and find the cable mounting point and undo the nuts holding it in place, DON'T take them off the threaded part off the cable!Add WD40 if rusted/stuck on.

3.Take the 12mm spanner and tighten the adjuster/expander square bolt between the back of the handbrake drum and the gearbox till it won't go any further, try to turn drum (there should be a little slack in the drive train to test this), it shouldn't move. If it does, your shoes most likely will need changing (see busters link above). If it won't budge, back off a little on the adjuster till its free again.

If your cable is tight enough, you can just adjust the expander and skip step 1.

4. tighten the cable back onto the clamp. adjust both nuts till the cable is taught. Give your handbrake a try, I personally like 3-4 clicks then its on. go for a spin and give it a try. Adjust as necessary, though it you should be better after first time.

All done.

to those who know better please pick apart

when adjusting brake you adjust shoes first then cable ,i have a cut down ring spanner with slot ground through it for adjusting inner nut on cable

Definitely. I did notice you mentioning this in a lot of peoples posts. So i took your word and slackened off the cable first then did the shoes, then tightened up the cable again.

Flare nut spanner is what you want. or you can butcher a closed face spanner.
