Rant alert!

OK i took the freelander into the garage to have the radiator changed (slight leak) been using coolant for a while...

Also noticed just before Christmas that the water pump was looking damp and the coolant consumption has risen from the difference between min and max every 400 miles to a whole header tank after 150 miles

Soo they called me today to say that there is alloy pipe running from the pump to the stat which has gone (quite badly) which is 290+vat  and whilst they are changing this they need to do the stat housing? and if they are taking the pump off it might be worth changing it as well...

then they say to do it they have have to remove the IRD to get to it

basically it is going to cost about a grand including the Rad

To be honest they have called me and given me the options and i do trust them which is always a start...

sooooo....anyone got any spare cash???

They're trying to ass rape you dude. Its your core plugs, they cant think of any way of knocking them out without removing the ird.

DIY
edit:check the yellow pages for rad rebuilds.I brought mine to a local rad guy,he had made one up for me while I was on my way there with with my knackered one for exchange .Cost iirc €70.If you find you need pipes http://www.lrseries.com/shop/category/listing/3312/Cooling.html?limit=0 .I hope you decide to fix it yourself.
Good luck.

Your core plugs are at the back of the engine block.Gegs is right I dont know exactly what the solution is.Get it home, get the belly pan off .Use your mini maglite to find the leak yourself.
1fkn grand . Identify which parts you might need and use the lrseries link to price the parts needed. Then decide if you want your trusted mechanics to do it for you.I'm quite sure you could pick up a much lower mileage engine for not much more money. Then you'd have your original for parts. If you go to the breakers yourself and help (I mean like break a sweat ,bleed and use your own tools)they will/should let you have the wiring loom and all the pipes and hoses the would usually just cut and snip.

I'm way too tight to fork out a grand on a coolant leak.

On my V6 the pipe between the pump and the stat. housing ,and the housing complete with stat are plastic. The cost for both parts, 'O' rings, and clips £37.08.
Why is a Td4 so expensive ?
