How much force should it need to separate an IRD from the gearbox on a 2001TD4, The 4 mounting bolts are out, prop off, N/S drive shaft out, O/S is loose so i know its not restricting it, O/S bracket and engine stabilizer are also off. Ive given it as much force as i believe is needed to overcome a cheap rubber seal but she ain't for moving. maybe a 1/16th of an inch clearance visible around the mating faces but short of hammering a wedge in I'm stumped  Does it really need a good amount of brutality or did i miss something...

(Gearbox is coming out for a new clutch/slave, stopped dead at the 'remove 4 bolts and drop out the |IRD unit')

This much.

Other than that I can only say beat the **** out of it. Tis why I keep the "persuader mallet" handy.

Nice one WLJayne, I've seen a few pictures of them off that show 'signs of persuasion' or hammer rash as its known here ;)

Honestly if you've done everything right it should be coming off with some persuasion but I haven't done any big transmission jobs yet so I'd wait until one of the more experienced guys pitch in :).

Not had it off! I'd expect to need a large screwdriver or sensible sized pry bar but nothing too drastic, are you sure you've got all the bolts out????

"Mighty Thor" hide mallet will do the trick. It'll be the weight of the box on the dowel pins making it reluctant to budge!

Good luck, orrible job, especially on yer back :)
