Is there a definitive test that you can do to tell if the IRD bearings are worn or nearing that point? I have up and down movement on the IRD within the bearings on my TD4 automatic. Does this mean they are worn or is some degree of movement normal?

hi chris, when i had worn vcu bearings i could hear quite a loud whiring noise from below, when driving, the noise got worse over a period of weeks.i called my local indipendent lr chap, he said the best way that he knew of finding the location of the whiring on the freelander transmission was to get under the car, with it raised, with all 4 wheels free off contact, then engage transmission and listen. he found it was the vcu bearings, that were worn, but he did go on to say the whiring noise could have been a number of other bearing faults. hope this helps.tim.

If it does turn out to be the VCU bearings then dont get them from a certain BRITish PART supplier.... get GKN or Genuine LR ones (GKN are OEM). I had cheap ones on from the aforementioned supplier and they were noisier than the duff ones they replaced. Subsequently changed to GKN ones and quite as a mouse now.
