I have recently done an upgrade to the later headlights and they appear to give poorer light than the originals. I am now considering fitting a HID kit, is this a simple task or have the bulb mountings got to be modified.

as far as i know you just need to wire them in, the bulbs mountings wont need to change, but HID is illegal on cars without self levaling system?

I have a TD5 with air suspension and the later lights fitted. I have not bought a kit yet but thinking that it would improve my current poor lights. I can remember that the bulbs are inside covers on the back of the lights and that the room behind the light is 'tight'. I have found a H7 HID kit on Ebay for £56 and you can select your power requirements, i.e 3000K upto 9000K. On a previous occasion I fitted the 4500K lights to my sports car and they are fantastic but the bulbs were not inside covers and the bulb mounts did not require being modified, which can happen on some lights.

the 4000k etc is not power, it is Kelvins which is a measurement of the light temperature which in turn affects the colour output, higher the kelvin the bluer they appear.
I have HID's in my 300TDi, and have fitted them in my Evo and had in my 200sx's, with no grief from plod.
I have also retro fitted a set of 300TDi lights with the projector unit's to give a crisper and more focused light, as opposed to standard light unit's where the light doesn't quite focus.
Regarding the self levelling system, afaik the only requirement is to have headlamp washers in place, as dirt on the lens disperses the light and can distort it towards oncoming vehicles.

Nope, HID lights must have a self levelling and headlight cleaning system. You will see that on ANY car that comes from the factory with them.

They are illegal to fit, do NOT work correctly with a headlight / reflector designed for a halogen lamp, and generally annoying as **** as they blind oncoming traffic and should be banned imo

Well, having read this requirement, I should be OK. I have air suspension which is self levelling and of course the original ligts are E marked. light washers are in place and working, so it is either HID's or Spectsavers, the first being the cheapest option. Thanks guys for your inputs.

So the fact its illegal don't matter then ?

Fit some uprated decent bulbs, you will be surprised what a difference it makes. Choice is yours tho

hi all
have fitted hid lighting to my 53 plate disco 2.
same kit from the egay site @£56
used the 6000k ones,
only fitted them on dip as the delay for them to fully warm up isnt suitable on main beam ,result
AMAZING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Your original E marked light fittings are E marked for use with E marked halogen lamps therefore to fit hid lamps E marked or not is illegal. If you wish to use hid lamps they and the fitting in which they are installed must both be compatabily E marked.
Your lights as they stand are illegal to use on roads.

Should have gone to Specsavers.

already been to specsavers had several sets, but lighting still poor they(specsavers ) dont do hid lenses ,so converted my own ....
