Hi, im new on here, looking to get my 1st landy sometime in the next few months (when i turn 21 insurance takes a big leap down!).

Thought it would be good to have a chat to people who knew alot more than me for general advise so joined up!

wouldn't dream of it! Mums got herself a Diesel one, looking to sell it already. More interested in disco's myself. I'v got to make the M5 trip to exeter from Brum evertime i'm off to uni and thought they'd be a nicer ride than a defender.

Yep good choice. you can pick a decent one up for £6/700 or a really good one for £1k. If your gonna be using it for a lot of motorway miles stick with the standard suspension setup, and resist going for a lift kit.

yer, i'v got the option of selling my current car (clio) and buying dads TD5 disco off him on the cheap. 130 000 miles but still a newer engine, but i wasn't sure if i could repair it etc if it went wrong easily and if it wasn't worth going for an older Tdi model? being newer i'v been looking around and already finding it harder to get mods for the disco II also.

you can repair a td5 but you need to be able to read the faultcodes or have a local garage which has the required software. There is almost no electronic trickery on a TDi and so they are simpler to work on. I'd say sell your dads td5 and use the money to buy a tdi and spend the change doing any improvement/mods/repairs that need doing on the TDi
