After swapping the thermostat on my 1999 1,8 petrol freelander on advice of RAC drained and bled the system only to find that the radiator is still freezing and the fan dont kick in..the landy didnt have a HGF as he did all the tests for me his advice was poss thermostat and or blocked radiator.

can anyone help re unblocking radiator or replacing it took me all afternoon to swap the thermostat with those horrible clips...

is it better to get a second hand radiator and just swap or is thre a way to srt this problem..the car still loses power after around 20 miles but doesnt appear to lose water no gunk in oil or water..after 15 mins of cooloing down drives ok again for a further 20 miles or what seems to be the engine being to hot.

all replies welcome as i an not a mechainic but will give it a go despite the probs today loved geting under the bonnet.

get it out and stuff a house pipe in it

lots of water

If its knackered then a new one would be the best bet but of course the more expensive route

If fluid tester used not worth ****, exhaust gas analylizer run with coolant header tank open and if from ambient engine under bonnet hc jump when probe over header-hgf failing that water pump impeller or blocked rad

If the rad is blocked the logic would dictate that you'd still get plenty of flow around the heater circuit - so if coolant doesn't spray out of you heater hose bleed screw when you slacken it then I'd say your pump is fooked.

water comes from the bleed screw under pressure when i bled the system..the top hoses are to hot to touch.but the rad is completely cold .

im in wigan wn3 6eg

yea bottom hose is cold top hose red hot and rad cold..is there a check to see if water pump and is this a garage job

tried that sprayed out and was hot didnt dribble out.engine temp takes about 5-10 mins to show on gauge half way

yea its had the mod done that was the thermostat i changed today the old one let water flow constant both hot and cold was told this was stuffed hence a brand new one

Is it the one with the grey casing? Sounds like it needs a really good flush.

not sure if the one at the rear has been removed or not as i say not mechanically minded..dont know how to tell if grey casing or not how do i tell the thermostat was a horrible brown colour when i took it of and swapped for a brnad new one.

you will have to remove the 3 bolts holding in the rear thermostat as well as the 2 bolts into the engine holding the metal coolant pipe and have a look.

if there is one in there don't throw it as you will have to carefully remove the gubbins from it, leaving the outer ring to refit and form the seal.

thanks will have a look tomorrow morning just hope i can find it and not unbolt the wrong thing ill google for pics later if the rad remains cold after this would it be stuffed and need replacing
