Hello!

I've got an O2 reg defender 90 TD5 (my baby!:) ) and it's got a horrible cassette player head unit. I've got a sony head unit from my old renault clio (it's a cdx-mp70) which i really want to use in the defender but I'm not sure whether it's possible.

I've had the current head unit out, but oddly, all the wires are taped down inside the cavity and i'm finding these difficult to get up in the first place but the thing i'm most bothered about is the surround which is on the current unit doesn't fit around the new unit, and the one that i've got with the new sony unit is wayyyyyy too small to fill the large space around it. Is there anywhere i can buy the surrounds?

I'm loathed to go to Land Rover dealership as they want £100 just to swap them over and I figure I can do it myself even if I am a weak girl and I've cut my finger already messing around with it!!

Next Job: SIDE STEPS! I look like a disabled pensioner trying to get in it at the moment as there's no side steps and i'm only 5ft2"! Hmm, not a good look in a skirt!

How easy is it to fit the side steps? Just the standard one step, i don't want the running bars or full length things, just the regular side steps... Agaian, Land Rover Dealer wants to rip me right off here... £100 for the steps and £60 to fit! Err yeah! I can buy them online for like £40!

Advice greatly appreciated folks!

Firstly you can get the surround from your local Motor Factors or maybe even Halfords

With the side steps they are a peace of **** to fit me thinks it is two bolts and you can get em on ebay cheap and if you only want one for the drivers side even cheaper ;)

Hope that helps
Cheers

What you need for the stereo is a fascia adapter, http://www.autoleads.co.uk/facia.html

Halfords do sell them but they will probably have to order one for a Landy.

On the steps........ the nice thing about Land Rovers is they are like meccano everything just bolts and unbolts so will be easy to fit.

Try paddocks for all stuff Land Rover, they are reasonable and I have found there srvice to be great, I have bought loads from them.

i've an 02 Td5 too. yes, you should have the centre console rite?

if there's already a stereo inside, then the mounting brackets are already there. if there's no stereo, then you'll have a plastic tray like thingy.

i cut the rear of the plastic tray and i've a nice stereo mount. wrap the stereo with some cloth tape or 'exhibition carpet' if you're fussy on the looks and slot the thing in. you can drill tiny holes on the plastic tray which align to the mounting holes of the stereo. wiring wise, there are quite a fair bit but nothing too diff, you need to find which ones go where. of cos the ariel one is pretty simple to find. next the power line, the speaker one (if you dun have an amp) then the remote wire (if you have an amp) and that's pretty much it. some of the wires there are not used.

side step, i've fitted them on my landy as well myself. 3 nuts and bolts, but getting the supporting bar (btwn chassis & step) into place does need quite a bit of strength. other than that the holes are already on the under side and chassis, no need to drill anything.

Happy landy-ing
