So 1995 4.6 auto with a serious g/box problem, its chucking fluid out of the dip tube when driving check level and it was right but now not showing every time I top up it blows it out? Wouldn't be so bad it it wasn't landing on the manifold and catching bloody fire! I've checked the breather which seems fine gears seem fine no lurching or slipping bit slow to go into 4th but guessing lack of fluid may be the cause of that problem. Anyone with any ideas?

Did you check the level as per the manual? sorry to state the obvious but it will at least put your post top of the list.;):)

There is nothing in there that can generate pressure other than air that heats up. That would suggest the breather is blocked not allowing the box to breath. The expanding air is pushing oil up the dip tube.

See, you only needed a little prodding:D He did post that he checked the breather but I couldn't think of anything else that would cause the problem other than overfull. Morning by the way Tony.:)

Morning Alan. Air pressure in the box casing is the only thing that can force oil up the dip tube. Other than as you say an overfill were expanding oil would give same result..

Thanks for the reply guys as you say pressure in the box? So is there a way to fully check the breather? Suggestions welcome :(

Update blew through breather tube with pressure hose oil out of dipstick tube. Blew down dipstick tube plenty of air coming out of breather tube away to test drive and see what happens.

Remove dipstick put a rag over dip tube apply gentle air pressure to breather tube. If breather is clear you should get oil or air depending on level out of dip tube. Level MUST be checked with fluid cold after starting engine and moving through all gear positions. Place in park then dip. Fluid should be between lower and upper marks.

Update 2 so out for a drive washed underside and engine block still at it I,m at a loss other than totally blocking off the dip tube (is that an option ?)

If you want to blow the box seals then you are really in the s hit. Make sure the breather is clear.

Hmmm I'm getting air back up through the breather when I blow air down through the dip tube. Is there a pressure valve or something on the inside of the box at the breather ?

Not as far as i am aware breather tube is just connected to upper rear of box with a banjo bolt. Is the O'ring on the dipstick good?
