Hi Guys

On friday my 99 4.6 p38 (bosch fuel injection) wouldn't start I put this down to a slightly dis charged battery so on charge it went.

However when I took it off of charge it still refused to start, so a call went in to the RAC.

The nice man turned up and said "well the fuel pump sounds like it's priming ok, you have power to the coil but no power to the HT leads"

He then proceeded to take the crank sensor off to clean it up as he was fairly confident that is the problem. But alas she still would not start and still no power to the HT leads.

He was still fairly confident that the crank sensor is at fault, so i ordered one which arrived today, I promptly fitter the sensor and turned to key to the sound of silence.

So my question to you good fellows is, what the hell is wrong with my car?, she turns over but don't start.

I have a friendly mechanic comming over this evening to take a look he thinks it could be a transponder fault, but the info on the dash isn't saying that there is a fault.

If it's a coding synch problem who can I turn to in the Nottingham area?

Thanks for reading

Andy :)

If you had to put money on it, do you think that is 50/50 or 80/100% the fault?

What makes them go out of sync?

Andy

I would say 75% sure.....

I am not sure which way round it is, but if the Check Engine light remains illuminated after the initial bulb check, it menas it is out of sync...or it could flash....or not illuminate at all.....it changed depending on model year and I can't remember which way round it is....

The BeCM is sensitive to allsorts of spurious things from RF frequencies to electrical spikes and even a sharp knock too.....

The Petrol systems are more prone to losing their marbles than the Diesels....something to do with a rolling code or something like that...other more knowledgable seniors on here will know the answer no doubt....

But the single most common causes for non starting are the Crank sensor and the BeCM/ECU sync.....

You have done one, so 75% sure it would be the other....

There a good possibility I'm coming up to Chesterfield over the weekend, but its not comfirmed as yet, if you can't get anybody to help, pm me I'II see what I can do...

That would be great thank you,the car is at my work just a couple of minutes from J26/J27 of the M1.

Is there anything I can be eliminating at the moment. I have a new RCL receiver to put on, would that help or hinder.

I would wait till you can get it started first.....

Last thing you want to worry about is anything else....

The mechanic has just left, he plugged into it and said there are no fault codes recorded, but he did find it odd that he wasn't getting an rpm reading when I cranked it over, would this be normal when there out of sync?

I have also been onto ebay and bought a Syncmate, I just hope that is the problem ggrrrr.

Andy :)

Out of Sync won't log a fault code....

I am not sure if the lack of RPM reading is related...but as the Dash is BeCM controlled, if it is not talking to the Engine ECU it won't get the RPM signal...

Fingers crossed the Syncmate sorts it....if not, it is only a matter of time before you will need it anyway...!!

Trust youbought the BSm01 model:cool:

My 4.6 had exactly the same problem a few weeks ago - would crank until the battery died, plenty of fuel to the injectors ...turned out to be the Air Temperature Sensor. No faults or lights were showing, even on diagnostics - turned out the engine thought it was -50c or something, was overfuelling and fouling the plugs.

Sensor changed - perfect

He did say that the ambient temp was showing as 86, the car was indoors but by no weans warm.

Hi Fellas,

I ordered a syncmate yesterday and it arrived this morning.

I still can't start this car, any other sugestions?

Now when I put the new crank sensor on there were two spacers (little bits of tube) already on the studs comming away fron the bell housing. the way it was re installed by the rac bloke was , spacers first then followed by the sensor then the nuts is this correct?

Andy

Sorry to hear you still have issues....

Is the attached any use??

Looks to be sensor - spacer - nut
