Hi guys my Lanrover has been back on the road for around a month now after 15 years of being laid up.
I drove off in her today and i heard a "boink" type noise then the rear wheels locked up.
it will dis engage gears but when i let the clutch up it is just locked.
I managed to move the red leaver backwards to engage 4x4 and this got me the 200 yrds back home but it was still dragging the rear wheels.

I am unsure if it is the diff or the gearbox ANY IDEAS"

If it is the gearbox will a later one fit possibly a 5 speed or will this be useless due to my car being a standard 2.25 petrol.

I did rebuild the transmission brake so i don't think it will be that.

Many thanks in advance

John

sounds like rear diff has seized, remove the rear prop and test, 5 speed box is no good as its permanent 4x4 and your front axle has no CV joints, it would get destroyed very quickly, you could fit a stage 1 front axle which would overcome the issue but its a lot of work and if you have an 88 then you would need a very very short custom rear prop that would eat UJ's very quickly
Could be a transmission brake issue but diff more likely and removing the rear prop will confirm

Cheers Steve

...or just lift a wheel off the ground and see if the prop moves with the wheel - there's usually enough slop n the system to see.

Hi guys many thanks for the pointers...it does seem that the diff has collapsed as with both wheels off of the ground it is solid, also no movement in the rear prop...

Is it normal/common for them to do this?

Would you suggest a whole new axle or just change out the diff..Ie remove it from the casing.

I am sorry if these questions seem "obvioius" but Landys are new to me and i am just getting used to steering the thing LOL.

Many thanks John

You'll need some drive member gaskets, a diff to axle case gasket and some ep90. Has the diff run dry? I seized a diff once 'cos I didn't check it properly.
