Hello! Just got a Freelander TD4.

Just a quick post to say Hello!

I picked up a Freelander TD4 Facelift a few weeks back.

Have already done a little bit of work on it (fuel tank cradle, propshaft bearings, plus little bits and bobs). Some things need doing (discs and pads, waxoyl) which I'll get round to.

So far I'm pleasantly pleased with the comfort and MPG.

I've a few questions, but I'll post them in the relevant threads.

The fuel tank cradle was easier than expected. Jack up the rear end, axle stands under each sill. Rear propshaft off as we were doing the bearings at the same time. Support rear subframe with trolley jack and unbolt (I don't think we completely removed the bolts). The fuel tank was supported with a ratchet strap to hold it in place (only about 5 ltrs in the tank). Lower subframe, remove cradle and replace. Reverse to put everything back together. I would say it took a couple of hours on the drive.

Nice one, I repaired mine (replaced the plates in situ) but if doing it again would go the same way.
Have you checked the VCU?

I was planning to check the VCU this afternoon just to see how it looks, but it's chucking it down!

Same here.

First Freelander I had I tried the one wheel up test with just a ratchet from my socket set and the VCU seemed to be solid but since then I tested the last two properly.
You really need to use the proper 1.2m length tool and 5kg weight to give a constant measured pressure against it.
As has been said before, this is not a definitive test but gives a good indication of condition.

I need to get a decent breaker bar to test it properly. It's been checked at the local LR specialist and he says it's OK, but keep an eye on it anyway (as people on here have said).

This weekend, now the sun is out, I need to decide on whether to fit the A Bar or sell it, and also take a look at fitting the driving light kit!

I just use a ratchet spanner (much easier to get at the correct starting point) and bungy strap a 1.2m piece of 2x1 to it. It has a 4" nail hammered in the end so I can hang a 5L container full of water on it. This was my TD4 when I first bought it.

It was pretty bad!
